Pc

Hey all,

Hope you are all having a great time during the holiday seasons!

I would like to build a PC for pictures, work, watching vids, playing games (not hard core) but still want the games to run smoothly. It doesn't need to be the top of the notch graphs.

I live in Quebec. Which Website should I order it from? NCIX, Tiger?

Also, do you guys have any suggestions for a build? I want it to be an ASUS mobo. If it can be 64x then sure.

Budget is around $1000. I can go a more if needed. I will be buying the windows 7 CD (NCIX has one for 128$ OEM)

You guys have suggestions?

I need a flat screen too. Something real nice that I can keep even after this PC.

Greatfull for your help!

Thanks and Cheers,

Ok, so here is what I came up with so far but it is a little too expensive for what I thought I would be paying. Is there a way to cut down a tad without losing performance?

The prices are from NCIX, so if you know of a cheaper place, I'm all ears.

Intel Core i7 860 Quad Core Processor Lynnfield LGA1156 2.8GHZ Hyperthreading 8MB Cache Retail Box Price: $354.99 CAD

ASUS P7P55D-E Premium P55 ATX DDR3 2PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 2PCI SLI CrossFire SATA 6GB/S USB3.0 Motherboard Price: $329.99 CAD

Kingston HyperX KHX1600C8D3K2/4GX 4GB 2X2GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600 CL8 240PIN DIMM XMP Memory Kit Price: $185.89 CAD

Antec Sonata III Black ATX 16IN Mid Tower Quiet Case 3X5.25 2X3.5 4X3.5IN 500W 120MM Fan Price: $148.71 CAD

GeForce GT 220 625MHZ 1GB PCI-E HDMI DVI VGA Price: $89.99 CAD

Antec Earthwatts 650W Power Supply ATX12V V2.2 EPS12V Active PFC 80PLUS 120MM Fan Price: $93.63 CAD

Western Digital Caviar SE16 640GB SATA2 7200RPM 16MB 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM 3YR MFR Warranty Price: $72.99 CAD

Liteon IHAS124 24X DVD Writer SATA Black OEM Price: $32.83 CAD

Samsung 2443BW-HAS 24IN Widescreen LCD Monitor Black 1920X1200 20000:1DC 5ms VGA DVI HDCP Pivot HAS Price: $344.65 CAD

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64BIT DVD OEM Price: $128.93 CAD

Then I add a basic keyboard and mouse and it comes up too
$1555.00

Do you guys see anything in there were I could get a same quality for less expensive if I change brands or something? I haven't checked parts in a few years and lots has changed.

Many thanks for any help.

Cheers,

The memory you picked isn't on the QVL for that board.
http://usa.asus.com/product.aspx?P_I...z8M&templete=2

Also, you don't need the extra CPU heatsink, the CPU comes with one.

Thanks I'll edit it out. (extra heatsink)

I'm trying to see the list for the RAM but it doesn't work for some reason. I'll try again in a few.

You can most certainly save yourself the $93.63 on that Earthwatts Power supply. The Antec Case has a 500 watt power supply built in from the description you listed and from what I saw on Newegg.

Not too sure how set you are with that Samsung monitor, but I have heard some good things about BenQ monitors. Here is a link to one on NCIX and its 219 CAD.

http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...nufacture=BenQ

Other things you could do is drop down on your processor and motherboard a bit. I am not all that familiar with the workings of the Intel systems, but I am sure someone else here could suggest something. Possible a best bang for the buck type deal?

That should get you started on a few plausible changes.

Your system is poorly balanced. You have a high end processor and motherboard, but low end hard drive and video card.

Look at the i5-750, base model P7P55D board, WD Black drive, and a Radeon HD4670 video card for a better balanced system. You also don't need DDR3-1600, DDR3-1333 will suffice. Drop the PSU, the one in the case is fine.

Look at both NCIX and newegg.ca.

Ok great comments! Thanks very much. Here is what I came up with.

Intel Core i5 750 Quad Core Processor Lynnfield LGA1156 2.66GHZ 8MB Cache Retail Box
Price: $234.99 CAD

ASUS P7P55D-E Deluxe P55 ATX LGA1156 2PCI-E16 3PCI-E1 2PCI SLI CrossFire SATA3.0 USB3.0 Motherboard
Price: $274.99 CAD

OCZ Gold OCZ3G1600LV4GK 4GB DDR3 2X2GB DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 CL 8-8-8-24 Dual Channel Memory Kit
Price: $125.67 CAD

( I went with P7P55D-E and DDR3 1600 since it was almost the same price as a P7P55D and a DDR3 1333)

ASUS Radeon HD 4670 1GB GDDR3 PCI-E VGA DVI-I HDMI Video Card
Price: $99.99 CAD
(Is this a good card to fit the system?)

Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB 7200RPM 32MB Dual Proc 3.5IN SATA Hard Drive OEM 5YR Mfg Warranty
Price: $78.11 CAD

With the screens, any other suggestion then the BenQ?

BenQ E2420HD 24IN 16:9 Widescreen Black LCD Monitor 2MS 50000:1 1920X1080 2XHDMI DVI VGA 4XUSB Hub
Price: $279.99 CAD

The one suggested in this thread by Extremerc12 is not on special anymore.

With the Antec case(see above), keyboard, mouse, Windows 7 and stuff.

It all comes to around $1500.

So is this better? or do I need to change more?

Thanks!!!

EDIT: also, anyone know of a screen that has an ajustable base?

Thanks!!

Make SURE that ram is on the Asus QVL for that board.

I would stick with Asus, LG, or Samsung monitors for best quality. Acer and BenQ can be a bit iffy.

You can save over $100 by going with the plain P7P55D: http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...nufacture=ASUS

I thought if it said 1600 it meant it was ok since the RAM is 1600. There are a bunch of numbers I have no idea what they are for, tho. (the 8-8-8 thing) There was also another ram kit that had a similar description but those 3 numbers weren't the same.

Help?

Don't I lose the USB 3 with that board?

You do lose USB 3.0, but do you really need it? Right now almost nothing uses USB 3.0 and it comes with plenty of USB 2.0 which almost all devices use.

BTW thanks for all your comments they are greatly appreciated. I love these boards. Still trying to figure out the RAM numbers.

So the $100 bucks question is, in how much time will this be useful.

I guess its a wild guess. Anyone know how long it took when the USB 2 came out?

It's going to be a few years until USB 3.0 becomes widespread; USB 3.0 is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0, so you can plug in USB 3.0 devices into USB 2.0 ports and it will work fine; I have also seen USB 3.0 cards that plug into the motherboard selling for around $40, so if you ever need USB 3.0 in the future, you can always just buy a less expensive USB 3.0 card.

The three numbers you are referring to for ram is used to determine latency, the lower the numbers, generally the faster they are although latency doesn't have that high of an impact. If you go on Asus' website you can find the QVL for ram for the motherboard on the motherboard specs page. You'll want ram like this which is on the QVL: http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...y&promoid=1130

Great info thanks!

So what is the upgrade that the i7 has over the i5 which makes it worth 130ish $ for some people?

The main difference between the i7 and the i5 is that the i5 has Hyper-Threading disabled and it is released at generally lower clock speed than the i7s.
