Need advice for parts to build my first PC
Hi,
I'm trying to build my first computer. I'm going with Intel. Looking for a system for some minor gaming, but more for some video editing, being able to watch HD videos, and using 2 monitors. I've looked on Newegg for some parts. This is what I'm considering putting in: Tower: COOLER MASTER HAF 932 RC-932-KKN1-GP Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119160 Motherboard: ASUS Maximus III Formula LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131482 CPU: Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115214 Power Supply: Rosewill BRONZE series RBR1000-M 1000W Continuous@40°C, 80Plus Bronze Certified,Modular Cable Design,ATX12V v2.3/ EPS12V,SLI Ready,CrossFire Ready,Active PFC"Compatible with Core i7, i5" Power Supply - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817182188 CPU Cooler: COOLER MASTER Intel Core i7 compatible V8 RR-UV8-XBU1-GP 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103055 Memory: CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 - Retail. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145260 Memory: CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 - Retail. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145260 Hard Drive: HITACHI Deskstar HD31000 IDK/7K (0S00163) 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail with MASSCOOL SYTRIN Kuformula SHF1 Ultra HDD Cooler – BK - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822145287 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835150085 Video Card 1: HIS H467QS1GH Radeon HD 4670 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161287 Video Card 2: HIS H467QS1GH Radeon HD 4670 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161287 Audio Card: SupremeFX X-Fi Audio Card (from motherboard) Optical Drive 1: SAMSUNG 8X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-ray Combo Model SH-B083L/RSBP LightScribe Support - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151195 Optical Drive 2: MSI Black 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 24X DVD Burner - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827100058 Card Reader: Koutech IO-RCM621 All-in-one USB 2.0 3.5" USB 2.0 Front Panel Multi-format Card Reader with USB 2.0 Port - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820162024 Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-758-_-Product Monitor 1: Sceptre 24” LCD Monitor http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...647&CatId=4420 Monitor 2: Acer X233Hbid Black 23" 5ms HDMI Full 1080P Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 40000:1 (ACM) - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009163 Could you look at this configuration and recommend any changes/improvements to this? Just want to make sure that everything is compatible before I start to build this. Thanks. |

1. You do not need a Maximus board - a standard P7P55D will do exactly the same thing at a much lower cost. The onboard sound is not X-fi, but it's decent, Via Envy.
2. I would recommend a Western Digital Black drive instead of a Hitachi, and you won't need a cooler. 3. You do not need 2 video cards to feed 2 monitors. One of those 2 will do fine, it has 3 outputs - VGA, DVI, and HDMI - of which any 2 can be used simultaneously. If you want more gaming oomph, get a 4870 instead of a 4670. I personally would get a dual DVI card and use DVI to both monitors. 4. You do not need a 1000 watt power supply - that system with one video card will be very happy with a QUALITY 500 watt - Corsair, Antec, or Seasonic. |

If you're going to do an "extreme" build, the 932 looks like a great case. For routine use, it might be overkill.
Based on its features and excellent reviews, and a good rebate+sales price ~$70, I was considering the COOLER MASTER HAF 922, the model down from the 932. If you haven't seen either of those cases in person, the 922 is BIG, and the 932 is even BIGGER (the retail box for the 932 was so large, I doubt it would have fit in my car anyway). If there is a retail store near you that carries the 932, you might just check that that case is going to work for you, and be what you want/expect. I went in expecting that the 922 was the case for me, saw it and changed my mind (the smaller Antec Three-Hundred, at $50). |

My favorite Coolermaster is the RC690.
