[Help please] Gaming / graphic design pc
I'm looking to build a new PC for gaming, graphic designing and some video encoding on the side. I haven't been keeping up with computer hardware for a while now so I need a bit of help. My budget is $2000~ and this is what I have so far. Recommended changes and additions welcome.

Welcome to pcmech.com the Kingwin power supply is no good, you need Seasonic, Antec, FSP or Corsair.
You don't need a sound card. The only X58 motherboard on the market reliable enough that I would recommend is the Asus P6T Deluxe V2 For a video card I recommend the ATI 5870 over the Nvidia card

Thanks for the reply. The power supplies you linked are 700 or 750 watt. Is that going to be enough to power two video cards? I haven't owned an ATI card in a very long while and I thought Nvidia cards were still a bit better but like I said...I haven't been keeping up with computer hardware for a very long while.
I'll definitely look into that motherboard you recommended though. |

Why are you using 2 video cards? One strong card is still the best bang for the buck.
ATI cards are better for graphic design and are head-to-head with Nvidia in the gaming arena. I also wouldn't spend the premium for Dominator ram. Buy the lowest voltage DDR3-1333 or 1600 with the desired timings that's on the Asus QVL. I would buy an Apricorn Aegis external housing and put a WD Green in it. I'd use a WD Green for your data drive too. That heatsink is not compatible with a 1366 socket. |

glc do you also recommend the asus motherboard that Khalil posted? So no nvidia and no dual cards. Which single card from ATI is very powerful and reliable?
posted wrong heatsink on accident. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835233029 Last edited by street1030; 01-18-2010 at 02:43 PM. |

There is only one Radeon card up from khalil's recommendation, the 5970 which has two GPU's, but is over $600 at this time. It may be overkill for what you want to do. If you do want the 5970 then make sure the power supply you choose it is one of the brands khalil recommends and it is on Radeon's Qualified Vendors List for power supplies.
http://ati.amd.com/online/certifiedpsu/index.html Edit: I just looked at the QVL and AMD has not updated the list for the 5970 card. The specs for the card say a PSU of 650 watts or greater with a 6 pin and 8 pin power connector. http://www.amd.com/us/products/deskt...uirements.aspx It is better to pick a PSU that is somewhat above the bare minimum requirements. If you ever get the desire to go crazy with your graphics cards and play games like Crysis at 60 FPS then buy a second 5970, but be sure to get a PSU now that can handle the additional load of a second card. There are PSU's that can do this and they are around 1200 watts. GLC's and khalil's ideas are the best bang for the buck....my ideas are definitely not.

Cool. I am planning an almost identical computer. Same Mobo, CPU and RAM. Watching your build.

Subtotal: $1,885.87
All from Newegg. The only question I have now is how much better of a computer will you be able to buy in 6 months time? I don't have all the money to build this PC yet. By the time I get enough (6 months from now possibly) do you think I'll be able to get much better for the same price? |

if you aren't building for 6 months, put all parts lists on hold. Things will be very different then.

I have a question for you glc. You recommended me low voltage memory and WD green harddrives. Is there a reason for this? In other posts, if i'm not mistaken, I've seen you recommend WD black harddrives to others.

Being that you are getting a SSD for your OS and apps, you don't need the speed of the Black for your data drive. You can certainly get one though.

Getting $1500 on my tax refund. Might buy the base components and reuse the harddrive and disc drives from my current computer in the new build till i can afford the SSD and the bluray burners.
Which would you guys recommend for video card? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121345 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102856 The sapphire card has more reviews but I can get the Asus card and my processor in a combo deal which saves me $40 Last edited by street1030; 02-04-2010 at 02:48 PM. |

I'll take an Asus video card over a Sapphire.
