New Gaming Computer, First Build
Hi,
My 13 yo son and I will be building a gaming computer for him in a few weeks. We've never built one before, but we've done some homework and we have put together a shopping list. We would appreciate any comments and advice. We are looking for the best compromise of performance and price with a budget of around $2500.00. We are especially concerned with the compatibility of the parts we are looking at, and also if there may be better choices for this system. Also, are we missing anything? Your comments are very much appreciated. Thanks in advance. That motherboard and chipset overall are unreliable, I recommend getting the i5 P7P55D-E with the i7 860 or even an i5 661 will more than do it. Gaming is all about the video card, the CPU you picked is over kill for gaming. It is a great processor for someone who wants to run multiple boxes on one unit (Virtualization).
Power supply, thermaltake is not the way to go on a high end system. Go Corsair, Antec or Seasonic, 850W is a good size. Welcome to pcmech

I would also recommend a WD Caviar Black instead of a RE3.

Thanks Khalil and glc.
I found this Corsair 850W power supply which seems to be a good candidate to replace the Thermalake: CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-009-_-Product I also found this WD Caviar Black to replace the RE3 (this one saves me a few bucks to boot): Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-284-_-Product I'll have to look in to the motherboard/CPU combo some more. I picked the ASUS P6X58D motherboard because it was so highly rated at Newegg. The i7-860 also looks very promising and would also save me some money. I kind of wanted to go over the 3Ghz threshold without overclocking but that's just for bragging rights. |
