Need some advice for building first gaming PC

Hi,

I'm looking to build my first custom PC soon. I want it to be intel based, and capable of running the latest games on High settings (or at least, well enough that you wouldn't notice a degradation in effects and such).

I already have a case, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers.

Here are the case and monitor specs:

Ultra Grid ATX Mid-Tower Case with Clear Side, Front USB and Audio Ports (won from PCMech Giveaway a couple years ago)
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...IN#detailspecs

Monitor: LG 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor With 2ms Response Time (W2453V) - Black
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...37&catid=25616

What I'm looking for in my build:
  • Intel-based
  • Games at High Settings, so fast processor/good GPU
  • DVI support for my monitor
  • Minimum 4GB RAM
  • Preferrably 64-Bit Windows 7
  • Good sound card, surround sound support would be nice (at least 5.1), though I don't have surround sound speakers yet
  • DVD-RW writer/drive
  • Wireless card (no LAN connection where I'll have the PC at the moment, as I've been using a laptop and my router's on the other side of the house)
  • Decently-sized hard drive. I'm not sure if I should go for a 100-250 GB SSD or a 500+ GB HDD (I currently use a 500GB external drive for large files and backups, and thinking of purchasing a 2TB external RAID setup for a better backup solution, as I'm running out of space on my 500GB).

For that, what can I expect to pay? I mostly order from TigerDirect.ca, though if I can find the same item cheaper on NCIX.com I use them as well. I'm located in Ontario, Canada, near Ottawa (to give you an idea on shipping, though Tiger's running a free shipping offer for orders over a certain amount right now). I'm currently making $9.50/hour from my part-time job, and have no other expenses to pay, although I'm probably going to purchase a reseller web hosting plan soon (abotu $29/month + $10/year for domain).

I had initially thought I'd have to spend about $2500, but considering I don't make that much (about $200 every 2 weeks), I'm hoping to get a powerful machine for a lower price.

You will need to give us the specs on your power supply. You will need a high quality one to protect your system. You may have one so please post and we will adjust if necessary.

Thanks jdeb.

One thing though, the shipping cost from NewEgg to me ends up being $80+. For some reason, even though they've opened the Canadian site, they ship from their US warehouse. If possible, I'd like to order from a Canadian-based site (i.e, tigerdirect.ca or ncix.com), but I'm having trouble trying to pinpoint your suggested parts there.

Another thing, I'd like to have an Nvidia card (biased toward that for some reason), but if an ATI card is better, I'm not too picky. :P

I have a power supply that came included with the case. It's an Ultra 700 Watt ATX Power Supply, model # ULT-VX700. Not sure how reliable it is, though. I tried googling it, and can't find any information on it. Ultra no longer has it listed on their website, either.

As for the wireless - it's my only option at the moment, like I said I'd have to stretch a cable all the way across the house. Moving the router isn't an option, either.

Just to be sure, is this hardware the same as you've picked out on NewEgg (aside from the parts I couldn't find):

Replace the Ultra power supply, they haven't had a very good reliability record. Any ram that you buy should be researched on the Asus QVL for the motherboard. You would be better off with an Asus, Diamond, or HIS branded video card. I'd really try to find an Intel X25-based SSD for speed and reliability.

Stay away from Tiger Direct if you can. Here in the US, they sell a lot of open box components and sell them as new. They will also sell a lot of liquidated merchandise from companies they buy out, so buyer beware. The memory is critical, you need to stay within the QVL (qualified vendor list) and reliable.

Here it is from ncix

DON"T skimp on the power supply, drop that one you have like a bad habit...

brings your total up to $1735.03

NCIX has a good selection of DVD burners in the $33 to $39 range. Stick with LG, Lite-On, Sony, or Asus.
