Ultra newb needs advice
I'm starting a list of the things i want in my new build, I'm trying to build a comp that will give me at least ten years of compatability. I'm not the most informed on pc's, but I know a thing or two, and i will research somethings. Right now, I'm stuck ,on deciding which mobo I want, along with video card(s), sound card, and I keep running into this overclocking talk. I also keep running into something called raid. I want to use this pc for a lil of gaming, video capture(dvr), internet, pretty basic I know, but I like the best of anything I buy. I know a few of the things I want in it which I will list, after that any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I know I want the following: intel i7-975 extreme processor, asus rampage II extreme or evga classified mobo, 24 gb hddr3 ram, blu-ray burner, dvd burner, great surround sound card(?), a HUGE amount of hard drive space for dvr and programs. Keep in mind folks that the last time I bought a pc was about '01. and i'm posting this from that same pc.

I'm still using 10 year old technology, and it was NOT absolute top of the line back then. You can build with components that are just under top of the line for half what top of the line would cost, and your dollar per longevity ratio will be MUCH better. You will never notice the difference between that Extreme processor and the ones just under it that cost less than half as much. You will also never notice the difference between an Extreme motherboard and the mainstream board that's half the price. 4gb DDR3 modules cost 4 TIMES as much as 2gb modules.
If I were building a socket 1366 system, there is only ONE motherboard that I would use, and that's an Asus P6T Deluxe V2. I would use an i7-920 and 12gb of DDR3-1600, two 3x2 kits. I would go for a high midrange video card such as a 5870 and use the excellent onboard sound. I would not use RAID, I'd just add more standalone drives as needed as your storage requirements increase. |

Hey glc, thx so much for the advice. I have a few ?'s about raid and what it is and does if you have the time. In the meanwhile I'll check out some of the other posts to see if anyone explains it. I'll also research those components you suggested.

Tom's Hardware has a very brief discussion of current AMD and Intel sockets in a "CPU Buyer's Guide", here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/267801-28-buyer-guide Page down to Section 5, or just page-search for "1366". |
