Non-Gaming Build $600 or less

I built my own computer In August of 2007, and it worked out great. Now the time has come for me to build one for my brother. He's not much of a gamer. He does a lot of web surfing, video streaming, downloading, and burning dvds and cds. I'd like to build him a computer that is as fast as the one I built in 2007 or better.

The computer I built in 2007 had an ASUS P5K MB/Intel C2D E6750@2.66G/2x1GB cosairDDR800XMS/Seagate 320GB/cosair 520 modular psu/evga 8600GT/cooler master case, etc.

Below is my preliminary parts list. Any suggestions on upgrades, downgrades, or alternatives would be much appreciated. Also what would be good choices for affordable monitors and 2.1 speaker systems. Thanks a lot guys!!

You know that 4350 isn't much better than the onboard video? If this will NOT be a gaming machine, spend a bit more on the mobo and get a P5QPL-VM and forego a video card - for now.

The ram is too fast for that processor - change it to DDR2-800.

Excellent. If needed later, you have a video card slot and a power supply that can handle a lower end card. If you want more headroom, you can toss another 35 bucks into the build and get the Sonata case with the 500 watt power supply.

Even though you are not gaming I highly recommend using a video card, onboard video sucks with windows 7 regardless of how much RAM you get, I would get a lower CPU and add a Video card.
Instead of the E7500 I recommend going with an E5400
and adding this to your shopping cart Asus 4550 You will be around the same budget and have a much better performing machine for windows 7

I have to disagree. I've run Windows 7 on an older Asus board with a 945G chipset and it was acceptable, it even ran Aero. Try it without first, you can add a card at any time.

I hate to disagree, the E7400 without a video card will not match the overall performance of the E5400 combined with the video card. Yes if he adds the video card to to the E7400 later it would be better than the E5400 but I am giving the guy advice on the best performance he can get with 7 on the budget he has now.
I have tested this in our workshop when I had a few complaints with 7, we were not including video cards with the base machines, I had built a few with E8200s and no video cards and they had issues when multiple applications were running and video was demanded.
Every new 7 machine we sell now has a video card in it and everyone is happy.

The only time you need 1066 speed ram is when you have a 1333 FSB processor and you want to overclock. This is DDR2 we are talking about here, not DDR3.

So you are talking about the CPU : DRAM ratio should be 1:1. Why just not recommend ddr2 533 memory then or dder2 667

No, you can run it faster, but running it 1:2 (if even possible) is a waste and can be unstable. DDR2-800 with a 1333 FSB processor is proven stable on P/G31 and newer chipsets.

I wouldn't build a H55 and then put a video card into it. I'd use P55 and a i5 or use the H55/Clarkdale onboard video.

One other question, if I may. Would an AMD build be worth looking into for less cash? If so what would be a good parts list?

AMD build suggestion.

Motherboard : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131368

cpu : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103706

memory : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231166

That 380 watt case/power supply worries me consider this one for another $20 whether you go with AMD or Intel : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-024-_-Product

The other parts are just fine.

Now that I've had time to think about it, and and after exploring my options, I have come up with my final list. This list Is based on value and quality as well as available stock. Parts will be ordered tomorrow with both zipzoomfly and newegg. Zip Zoom fly has some nice deals right now if you're willing to wait for a Visa debit card rebate. I would have ordered all with newegg, but hey, that extra dough might buy beer or something. I cheaped out a bit, on the motherboard and video card but I think it was probably overkill to get an ASUS board when I can get a GIGABYTE for $50. The video card is re-certified but has excelllent reviews and is cheap. Any final thoughts before I order would be appreciated, and thanks again.
