Building My 1st Gaming PC
Hi, I'm looking to build a gaming PC that can play the latest FPS's at good or max quality. I looked around on Newegg and came up with these components.
Case COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119137 Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128392 or ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO AM3 AMD 785G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131398 Video Card EVGA 01G-P3-1158-TR GeForce GTS 250 1GB 256-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130514 or BFG Tech BFGEGTX260MC896OCE GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814143155 Power Supply CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 ... - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005 or CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139006 Memory G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL8D-4GBHK - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231189 Processor AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor Model HDZ955FBGIBOX - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103674 or AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103727 I am leaning towards an AMD build instead of Intel because they seem to be cheaper (more bang for the buck). My budget is about $1000 for everything, but I don't want to spend more than $700 on the main components (case, motherboard, cpu, graphics card, power supply, and memory). Please help me decide which parts to go with. Thanks |

Hi and welcome to pcmech. I would go with the Asus motherboard just in case one of these days you need support, Asus offers the best warranty & support on the market.
The GTS 250 is not going to give you top notch fps, it is a weak card, it is basically a re-badged 9800GTX. If you want the best you need to look at ATI 5000 series, the 5870 is the best single GPU card on the market. If the 5870 is out of your budget you can always go with the Asus5770 or Diamond 5770 which will smoke that gts250 Everything else you picked will make an awesome gaming rig.

Which power supply and processor should I go with if I get the Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT)?

I would go with the 955 Deneb. I don't been anything else different between the two besides .2 GHz. You can use the 15 bucks or so you save and put it towards a better video card.

There is also the 5970 which has two of the GPU's that the 5870 has. Its also just over $600 bucks, but you were asking about a high end gaming computer than can run most games at high settings and frame rates.
I don't want to be the spoiler here but $1000 is not going to get you a high end gaming computer. It will get you a decent gaming computer though. To give you some idea, you will have to set your game settings at less than maximum for Crysis, MW2 and perhaps L4D2. Leave some working room with your PSU in case you ever want to go with a really high end graphics card. 650 watts is right at the borderline for the really high end cards. An 800+ watt card would allow you to play any single graphics card and give you a little working room.

The Ati asus or diamond 5850 will game like a champ and you can make it fit into your current buget. You can always cut back on the CPU and go with AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz 2 x 1MB L2 to fit the better video card in your budget.
The video card and power supply are the most important in a gaming rig. |
