That motherboard has endless issues. If you must use this very troubled platform use this motherboard ASUS P6T Deluxe V2.

That video card is cheaply made and that company has very poor customer service. Only 2 ATI card makers I recomend are Asus and Diamond.

Hitachi Hard Drives are ok but you will do yourself a favor buying a Western Digital instead, their failure rate is much lower than Hitachi and if it fails you will get a replacement in less than a week from WD, the Hitachi will fall into the Abyss.

You don't need a seperate CPU cooler. Great power supply choice and good memory.

I highly recomend you forget the X58 chipset and go to the I5 instead.

The Gene has alot of issues?
I did a lot of research on it and from what I could find there were a few issues with not recognizing unsupported ram and a few correctable sound card issue but couldn't find anything else other than what happens with every board out there - occasional DOA etc.
Can you point me to a forum or review where they discuss the problems that it has?

Thanks for the input on the other stuff as well, I will consider the changes.

Anyone else?

I would go with Khalil's advice. His business has built one hell of a lot of computers and his advice comes from personal experience. He and glc are the two most knowledgeable people in this forum.

I'll add my thoughts.

1. The Asus P6TD Deluxe is replacing the P6T Deluxe V2 and it's solid.
2. Definitely replace that Hitachi with a WD Black.
3. My ATI choices are Asus, Diamond, and HIS. Sapphire is also quality, but their end user support is basically nonexistent.

With that said, for GAMING the X58 platform is not necessary. The most bang for the buck is P55, such as the Asus P7P55D or P7P55D-E (SATA 6.0 and USB 3.0) and the i5-750. The only change this would necessitate is a dual channel ram kit (or 2 kits) instead of the triple channel.
