PC build on budget
My P4 motherboard just died and of course I cant find a replacement due to age, it has agp video, and older ram so I guess i will need to up replace most of the parts. I have a good Antec case and corsair 650 power supply. I prefer INTEL and have about a 500 dollar budget. I was looking at the following:
ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo motherboard - 129.99 ASUS GeForce GT 240 PCI express - 89.99 Core 2 Duo E7400 Wolfdale - 126.99 G Skill 2x1Gig PC 8500 - 52.99 I have been reading this forum and see were everyone is recommending the i5 or i7. Can anyone recommend a good motherboard, video, cpu, and ram for these that might fall in the 500 dollar range if possible? thanks |

If you want socket 775, you made good choices, except any ram faster than DDR2-800 (PC6400) is a waste. I'd get a 2x2 kit (4 gigs), that will still bring you in under budget.
i5 system: Asus P7P55 LX - $119.99 i5-750 - $194.99 G.skill 2x2gb DDR3-1333 $94.99 Whatever you can afford for a video card |

OK here is what i have based on the recommendations:
Core 2 Duo ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo motherboard - 129.99 ASUS GeForce GT 240 PCI express - 89.99 Core 2 Duo E7400 Wolfdale - 126.99 G Skill 2x2Gig PC 6400 - 84.99 Total = 431.96 i5 ASUS P7P55 LX - 119.99 ASUS GeForce GT 240 PCI express - 89.99 i5 750 Lynnfield - 194.99 G Skill 2x2Gig DDR3 1333 - 94.99 Total = 499.96 So should I go for the newer i5 or just stick with the core 2? Will the ASUS video card perform well on games? Thanks |

The Core2Duo is still a very powerful Platform but since Intel decided for marketing purposes to introduce a new socket I personally would go with the newer just for future upgrades and the i5 is faster not that you will actually notice it unless you benchmark.
EDIT:The i5-750 is a Quad Core so that is a big advantage it is definitely worth the $50 Last edited by Khalil; 02-20-2010 at 01:25 PM. |

The Radeon 5670 is at the same price point as the GT240 and has DirectX 11 support.

I usually buy Nvidia due to bad experience with some ATI cards earlier on but I am willing to give them another try. Preference on the ATI card maker?
ASUS, Sapphire, XFX, HIS or PowerColor? |
