Couple last minute questions before i purchase:

1. I get all the stuff mailed to me and have it all. I install like the install thread shows (which everyone says is fairly easy). I need to purchase a windows OS and install. After all that i'm done, and can run like any regular Desktop?

2. If anyone sees any issues with this set up let me know pls!

3. How long does it take to build a system similar to this? I have all the parts listed that are necessary, right?

4. Would you recommend windows 7?

Thanks all for reading, I'm quite new to this computer building thing..

First off, don't go with XFX as the manufacturer for your video card... XFX is not a recommended brand. Go with and trust a video card from ASUS or Sapphire.

I'm not too sure about that socket 1366 motherboard. Someone should be able to comment on that. Also, when choosing a motherboard, make sure to pick out compatible RAM that is listed on the motherboards QVL. The QVL can always be found on the manufacturers website under the model you are looking to purchase.

Do you have an optical drive? If you are going to build a new PC, especially with the newest hardware go with Windows 7 64-bit.

XFX is compatible with the best warranty in the business

I upgraded to these:

OCZ 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model OCZ3X1600R2LV6GK - Retail.

Yeah its a gaming rig. The motherboard should be compatible no?

A P6T Deluxe V2 or a P6TD Deluxe would be a better bet for a mobo.

That power supply is not certified for 2 of those video cards, just one. Believe it or not, there are *NO* certified Corsairs for two 5850's. You need something like this:

Believe it or not, no XFX is not a quality manufacturer. Regardless of their "warranty" they have poor customer service on top of being a poor quality manufacturer.

It is your money and you are asking our advice. I would recommend you sticking with ASUS, Sapphire, Diamond or HIS for an ATI card.

Way over kill on the triple channel motherboard and the CPU. Your main component on a gaming rig should be the video card not the motherboard. I would forget the i7 all together go with an i5 with a 5870 video card and forget XFX, they have horrid customer service and warranty.

EDIT: In response to the questions in your PM. I will reply here so others can benefit from the reply.

I personally think the i7 platform is over kill for gaming, I would only recommend it for someone who wants to render using 64 bit applications.

Here is my recommendation for you and hope glc chimes in:

ATi 5870 (I prefer Asus or Diamond but they are out of stock)
Power Supply
Motherboard
Memory you can double those if you want to go 64 bit Operating System!
CPU
Hard Drive

You don't need 2 video cards unless you plan on running more than 2 instances of a game on multiple monitors. Crossfire and SLI are just fancy ideas and a way for the video card makers to sell more cards, you are always better of getting one top end card than 2 Mid-High range cards.

Bare Drive Question

Hey all,

I'm going to be ordering everything to build a computer on newegg. Here is the hard drive i'm getting:

Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive . (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136284)

I have read that i need to buy some sort of cable, mounting screws and DL software in order for it to work?

Do i need to buy these things separately? Should i find a retail version instead?

This a link to what case i'm getting if that matters (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811133056).

Thanks for your help

Yes - you will need the SATA and the Power cables and 2 to 4 screws...

can you give me a link to where i can find a little set of those things?

Will i need any more screws/cables for other parts of my system? Or just the hard drive?

Thanks

If your also buying a motherboard, power supply and case, you won't need the mounting screws(comes with the case); you won't need a power cable(sata power cables come standard on all modern psus); and you probably won't need a sata data cable(usually comes with the motherboard). Check out what comes with your other purchases before buying any of the above. For example, with your case, you will get a bag of hardware needed for mounting things to the case like your hard drives, optical drives, motherboard, etc.

Said see ya to the 1.1kw psu. I chose it because it had some combo deal with my i5 cpu.

Going to pick up the 1k corsair.

Either way, i think i'm finally ready to purchase and start building my first rig

I'm a little worried, but i think with all the DIY sticky's on this site and others i should be able to get through it ok.

Tons of thanks to those who helped me design this thing! Truly appreciated and would not really know anything without all this help.

Threads merged, please keep everything about one build to one thread. Thank you!

I'd buy the motherboard that Khalil recommended, it has SATA 6.0 and USB 3.0. You do not need those bags of screws or the arctic silver (unless you replace the stock heatsink).

Go with the i7 x58 chipset. If your going to use an Asus p6t or p6t d ver 2 you may get a board and processor that's not compatible. Newegg shipped me a DO stepped I7 and an older p6t d ver2. The bios will not support DO processors. There is no way to upgrade the bios without a CO processor. I recommend the Gigabyte x58A UD5. Sata 6 Usb3 ,The x58 chipset also supports the new 6 core processors for future upgrades. Even the original bios support the newer DO stepped processors. I have an Intel SSd OS drive and two 320 storages. I smile every time this thing boots to win7.
