First Build

I'm a network consultant by profession and have never built a PC.
I work mainly with routers, SANs and servers.

I recently started playing COD MW2 and decided I need to build a PC for gaming as my Dell Inspiron PC is not cutting it!

After a little research, here's what I've come up with so far:
  • CPU: Intel i5 750 2.66Ghz
  • Mobo: ECS P55H-A
  • Power: Corsair 550VX
  • Video: Sapphire Radeon 5770
  • Memory: 4Gb (2 x 2Gb) G.Skills Ripjaws DDR3 1600
  • HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.
  • Case: NZXT Gamma Classic
  • Optical: Samsung SH-222A

This costs about $775 at Newegg.
I just wanted to see what your thoughts were as an entry gaming build. I will wait to measure the case before deciding on a cooling system for the i5.

I have the choice of Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit or any other OS through my Microsoft subscription. What OS would you recommend for gaming performance with this hardware combination?

I'm sure more questions will come as I learn more.
Thanks

If you have a camera, a card reader would be nice only a few bucks saves connedcting the camera with the cable. Maybe an aftermarket cpu cooler and some thermal paste

is there a glitch on this thread that keeps removing the first post? I've posted it twice now!

Also will any of the parts I order from Newegg include the cables I'll need to connect the motherboard to the front panel USB/audio and SATA cables?

thanks GRP.
I've seen folks recommend this one:
COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus Intel Core i5 & Intel Core i7 compatible RR-B10-212P-G1 120mm "heatpipe direct contact" Long life sleeve CPU Cooler - Retail $34.99

and will most likely get that once I measure and ensure it will fit.
I may add the card reader - I have the SD slot on one of my laptops and a combo USB card reader I travel with too.

Replace the motherboard with an Asus P7P55D-E, the hard drive with a Western Digital Black, and the DVD with a Lite-On, LG, Sony, or Asus - and you are good to go.

Motherboard comes with SATA data cables and the case comes with front panel cables.

I'll clean up all the extra posts.

I switched the HDD and optical drive per your recommendation but kept the ECS Mobo.
Everything arrived today.

Set it up and tested out of the case, then assembled in the case. It was a lot simpler than I thought!

Within an hour I was installing Windows 7 Pro x64 (which only took about 20 minutes I think) and now I'm downloading my games on Steam.

Thanks all for this awesome forum (especially glc) - without it I would not have known where to start and how to do this so simply.

Ouch. Keep an eye on it, they aren't particularly well made.
