Weaning into AM3

Hey guys

My current configuation is this.

AMD Athlon X2 6000+ 3.1 GHZ
4GB DDR2 G.skill 800MHZ
550 PSU Corsair
512 SAPPHIRE HD4850
Asus M2N-E Mobo
Windows XP 32-bit

Anyways... I am kind of wanting to wean myself into the new AM3 Platform and was wanting to do this

GIGABYTE GA-770TA-UD3 AM3 AMD 770 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
$94.99

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor
$165.99 -

G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel Kit
$159.99

And Windows 7 64-Bit Home Premium

Things I am salvaged are my case, my hard drive, DVD- Rom drives, PSU 550 watt corsair. Rest is becoming replaced as mentioned.

Would this be okay to do? And If I were to upgrade my video card with my future upgrades, what's the biggest video card you think I can run with my current PSU?

Thanks,
Mark

AM3 does not support triple channel - just dual channel. Your PSU can handle any single video card out there except maybe the real high end ones with dual GPU's.

So should I cut my ram down to 4 gigs? I was just trying to provide myself with plenty of headroom because I realized the 64 bit version of Windows 7 utilizes almost 2 gigs of ram. And some games these days, I have noticed are recommending upwards of 2 gigbs. Suggestions?

With the games that are out now, chances are not very much. I have 4GB and I have never come to 100% use in any new game like Battlefield bad company 2, Borderlands, Mass Effect 2, Resident Evil 5. Then again I have an overkill on ram for an E5300 lol.

DDR2 but as you can see in my sig I have a 9800GT...yes an older card I have DX9 enabled, low details (for some reason this takes up a good amount of frame rate...I think it's my CPU lol), medium textures/shadows, high effects, no HBAO, 16xAF 0xAA.

So... I think I finally got my gear figured out. I was going to go with this motherboard, ram, and processor...
GIGABYTE GA-770TA-UD3 AM3 AMD 770 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor

OH, and slapping on Windows 7 64-bit in place of XP.

For 475 bucks I figured that's a heck of an upgrade.

Keeping my Sapphire HD4850 for now, and possibly upgrading to a 260 later. Basically, I'll have a whole new computer. Everything I can salvage and I am pretty sure I can run something along the lines of a 260 with a 550 watt power supply. Am I right?

A quality 550 watt will run any single card made except the real high end ones with multiple GPU's on one card.

I am wanting to get Windows 7 64 bit. All I am going to play is Starcraft 2 when it comes out. Just making sure that 4 gigs will be more then plenty to run that operating system as well as starcraft 2. if that's the case, I can just scratch everything else out and just get the OS and be happy.

4 gigs should be plenty for now. You can always put 4 more gigs in later.

I'd opt for a better board...with the 955 make sure the board is 140watt CPU safe and I would use atleast a 790 chipset or newer...

the 770 is ok but not as good as the 790...some of them were finicky with the Phenom IIx4 CPUs

Change of plans.

The whole reason I was planning on doing this was because my video card is a PCI Express 2.0 and I wanted to upgrade the motherboard to one that was PCI Express 2.0. My motherboard that I have now is an Asus M2N-E (which is PCI Express x16).

Well, I found this mother board, GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3. I am planning on reusing my ram processor and video card.

My ram is G.Skill DDR2 800MHZ
My processor is Athlon X2 6000+ 3.1 GHZ
My video is Sapphire HD4850 512

If I was to replace my M2N-E with GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3 would there be any bottlenecks with my system? Such as the ram or processor bottlenecking my video card. Or any other combination of the three lol. I don't have the money to do a full fledged build, or even doing anything such as upgrading processor and ram either right now.

I know this sounds like a waste... but I just want to be able to unleash the full bandwidth of my video card so that I can get it's full potential. That is why I am upgrade motherboard for the PCI Express 2.0 feature.

BTW, would I really notice much if any improvement from upgrading my mobo from PCI Express 16x to PCI Express 2.0?

BTW, I will be installing Windows 7 Home premium 64-bit on this machine. It should play nicely with Modern Warfare 2, Starcraft 2, so on so forth.

Thanks,
Mark

The key is this:

The answer is - NO. A 4850 can't saturate PCI-E 1.0 as long as it's running at x16 and not x8. Just wait till you have to upgrade everything.

Chances are your running in x16 because that's pretty default for your system. You can check in "graphics card" tab in Gpu-z. You can download it here.

So basically my video card is running at it's full potential? And nothing I do will bring out any more power from it. Even if I upgraded the whole computer and kept my video card the same as it is.

So... do you see any bottlenecks at all with my system as it sits? with the Athlon X2 6000+, 4GB of DDR2 800 and that video card and M2N-e mobo? Any at all?

So I am back to my original plans of upgrading. With my choices listed above I was thinking of throwing in a 260GTX for about 200 bucks. Is there a better choice for my money? Should I wait? Or is this the best bang for my buck?

I may go up another 50 on the video card if the performance increase is noticeable.

anyone? Or maybe perhaps a 5850. Would a good quality PSU like the one I have, Corsair 550 (41amp on 12v rail) be good enough to power this card? Their website says it will be.
