New PC Build- $1500 budget
Looking to build a new PC with a $1500 budget. Would like it to be an all-purpose machine with the ability to play the newest games (doesn't have to have the best video card though). Prefer Intel processor. Do not need any peripherals.
Any suggestions on components? |

Possible areas to save:
Save $100 by changing the CPU from the i7-930 to the i5-750 Save $40 by changing the PSU to a Corsair 750W PSU Save $40 by reducing storage from 1Tb to 750Gb (Still Caviar black) |

Sorry, the i7-930 does not fit on that motherboard. For gaming, the i7-750 is all you need. The 5870 is more than you need for a video card, and the 950 watt PSU is also overkill. Look at the Radeon 5830 and 5850 cards. Even 750 watts is more than enough for either of those.
Spending more than $300 for a video card just doesn't do much for you other than clean out your wallet. |

CPU
Core i5-750 $200 Motherboard Asus P7P55D-E 6Gb/s USB 3.0 $140 RAM G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) $107 Graphics card Radeon HD 5830 $250 PSU CORSAIR CMPSU-650HX 650W Modular Power Supply $120 Hard Drive WD Caviar Black 1TB - OEM $120 Optical Sony Optiarc 24x - OEM $26 OS Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM $105 The choice of case is ultimately yours, but I emphatically recommend this one: Lian Li Lancool PC-K62 $100 It's a durable, good-looking case with a lot of great features and excellent air cooling. You could even afford to toss in a SSD for your OS and programs: Intel 40GB SSD - Retail $130 Total = $1298 before tax and shipping. Last edited by triquee; 03-06-2010 at 10:17 PM. |

Thanks for the feedback. Few more questions....is there a consensus on whether ATI or Nvidia chipsets are better? Also, is Saphire one of the better card manufacturers or are there others with better reputations?
Also, I've always heard that Corsair is one of the best RAM manufacturers to go with. Is G.Skill just as good? Finally, what is the min wattage I should go for with a power supply given the other suggested components. I want a quality unit that's going to be reliable, but don't want any more power than I need to support my system. Thanks again for the help...much appreciated. |

650 is all you need, you could even get by with 500. G.skill is decent but you can't go wrong with Corsair. The best ATI brands are Asus, Diamond, and HIS. Sapphire is good quality, but they have essentially no end-user support. ATI is getting our recommendations now because Nvidia doesn't have DX11 cards yet. There is, and will be, no consensus on which is "better".

That would require an expensive X58 motherboard.
