AHCI and XP
Hi
I read glc's sticky thread in this section about requirement for AHCI drivers in XP. I was rummaging around in my BIOS on an unrelated matter and remembered that I set up my HDDs in IDE mode because AHCI never seemed to work. Seems because I never had the drivers.... But having already installed XP SP3 (slipstreamed) is there a way to get the AHCI drivers into my OS so I can start using my HDDs in AHCI mode? Without reinstalling XP? My pc doesn't have a a:\ or a b:\ assigned or a floppy disk drive (although I can get my hands on one) Thanks for any assistance.

I'm under the impression that n order to use it like that, you would have to do a fresh install.

Shadow is correct, and a floppy drive is required or you have to find a way to slipstream the drivers into another burn.

You do not have to do a fresh install in order to use AHCI. It will require some minor registry tweating however. I did this for my SSD. I figured it's worth a try if I have to reinstall windows anyway. It's easy and it works.

GRP, that link is for windows 7, not XP. It won't work for XP.
As for changing from IDE mode to ACHI mode, I read a while back that it is technically possible using a repair install. There were a few other steps involved as well, but honestly, the benefits of ACHI don't warrant the trouble.

Thanks Force Flow, My bad on Win XP, but, if ifnfan has to reinstall windows anyways, it's a good time to dig a little deeper and install windows7.

lfnfan, I have just ordered parts for a new build and am going to use XP. I read glc's sticky about AHCI, and was concerned because the new computer will not have a floppy drive.
I did some research, found the AHCI driver on the Asus chipset driver I downloaded from their website, and put it onto an SP3 slipstream CD that I made using nLite, which seems like a great program to me. In browsing around trying to figure out what to do about AHCI support, I came across a thread that mentions a registry hack that might work even with XP already installed. Haven't tried it, but here's the link: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/1358...vers-on-an-xp/ |
