New Gaming PC

Hi everyone,

I've been out of the hardware business for a long time and somehow everything seems a little bit overwhelming to me. I'm trying to get all the right parts together so i can build a gaming PC for my son. Its general purpose should be gaming and storage. I have spend quite some time figuring out the part i would like, however i think i may still be a little slow for the newest games as well as upcoming ones.

Here is the list of the hardware i would get (we already have 2TB HDD's at home so no need for that)

OS - Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116758

Motherboard - ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131614

CPU - Intel Core i7-930 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 Quad-Core Desktop Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115225

PSU - Antec TruePower Quattro TPQ-1000 1000W Continuous Power ATX12V / EPS12V ( i know its a lot but i think with future installations it would be the wisest choice)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371012

Video Card (2x) - XFX HD-477A-YDFC Radeon HD 4770 512MB 128-bit GDDR5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150369

Crossfire Bridge - HIS CrossFire Bridge Interconnect Cable Model HCFBC4065
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-002-_-Product

RAM - OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-365-_-Product

Case - Antec Nine Hundred Two Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129058

Do you professionals out there think that this setup will be enough? If not, what would you recommend? the price range should be around 1500-1800 (currently it is arounf 1300 so there is some room)

Thanks to everyone that would help.

Greetings
Vaan

Instead of getting two low end cards and putting them in crossfire, a single high end card will serve your purpose better. Take a look at Asus/Diamond HD 5870.

I agree with the 5870 suggestion. Also, with just one card, the 1000W PSU might be a bit overkill. Corsair makes a great 750W modular that would probably cover your needs.

You may also want to consider an i7-860 and an 1156 board.

Ah I checked the card, looks great. Since you are all up to date, in what timeframe would such a card drop to a price where I could get a second one?

About the PSU: I looked at one before, but since I want to have more flexibility with upgrades, wouldn't it be worth the extra buck??

One more thing, does the component setup look compatible to you? I checked it about 50 times but you never know when a little thing slips by unnoticed.

Other than that, would you think that the system would provide my son with some years (1-3) of 3d fun??

The X58 platform is still a bit buggy. If you want to do the 1366 build it is suggested to stay with the an ASUS P6T board... I would suggest going with Corsair or G.SKILL RAM instead of the OCZ. My first and foremost choice is to go with Corsair whenever you can. OCZ is still a good, solid quality manufacturer though.

The performance increase would be negligible compared to a newer card that will have already arrived on the market. By the time you need a new card, you should be able to afford a new one to replace it.

Not necessarily... 1000W is A LOT of power, even for a gamer. You should be fine with the 750W for upgrades in the future.

The X58 boards of choice are the P6T Deluxe V2 and the P6TD Deluxe. However, I'd recommend a P7P55D-E and a i5-750 or i7-860. This will take dual channel ram. A single 5870 will kill any game out there.
