Upgrade Troubles

Howdy,

Tonight I upgraded my mobo, cpu, ram and video card. I have had a chain of alternating troubles. At first the power switch didn't work until I changed the cntrl jumper. After that it posted fine, but when I got to Windows neither my serial keyboard or USB mouse worked. After going through the BIOS setup pages and finding everything okay (as far as my limited experience goes) it started to hang when loading Windows. I can use safe mode now with a functioning mouse and keyboard, but Windows will not load normally.

Other issues:
No internet connectivity. Blank page under My Network places.
DVD drive recognizes graphics card disc, but says "no disc" with motherboard disc.

Old System:

EVGA 01G-P2-N592-AX GeForce 7950GX2 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support Dual GPU Video Card

ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 Conroe 2.66GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor

New system:

ASUS P7P55D-E LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory Model CMV4GX3M2A1333C9

Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor

HIS H587F1GDG Radeon HD 5870 (Cypress XT) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you reinstall your OS or repair it after you upgraded those components?

Never thought of it. I'll do it tonight after work. I won't need to format and do a complete reinstall, will I? If so, I may as well upgrade to 7 now.

I would HIGHLY recommend the reinstall and if you already have Win 7, go ahead and install it.

Ok. Ran repair, no joy. Still would not start Windows. Bit the bullet and formated and attempted to reinstall. It is now hanging at 35 minutes in the "Installing devices" portion. I'm starting to wonder if it's a hardware issue.

Any new suggestions?

Thanks

Also, what is your PSU wattage and manufacturer?

It's a 650-watt OCZ that has worked well.

The problem isn't that Windows never started, it's that it works less and less:

First time: Windows ran with no mouse or keyboard.

2nd: Would only start in safe mode

Eventually: no safe mode option

Now: hangs on installing XP

Yes, you have a hardware issue. You can try it with your old video card - you can also run diagnostics on the hard drive and ram.

Does your power supply have an 8 pin EPS connector for the motherboard, or are you just using a 4 pin? Quad cores need all 8 pins.

I'll have to look at the power connections. There are 2. I don't remember the numbers of pins, but they both fit without having extra space. I'll also try my old video card and Ram. Thanks.

You can't use the old ram. Run DIAGNOSTICS on yours.

www.memtest.org

What brand is your hard drive?

Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip) - unzip it and burn the iso.

Go to wdc.com and get WD Diagnostics (for DOS) for the hard drive. Same deal, bootable iso.
