First Time Budget Build - $800

Ok so once I am back from spring break I will be building a computer with the help of my roommate who has done builds in the past but is not currently up to date with the new hardware. I can get all the software needed for little to no cost so that is not in the equation here. I also will be using my LG LCD tv for the time being as a monitor because it is already being used as a second monitor to my ever failing laptop, and I have a mouse and keyboard. So I will mainly be just needing the tower unless I am missing something. I will be doing some gaming but nothing too crazy and high end. I do tend to do some multi-tasking with multiple applications running on dual monitors (once I purchase a second). Here is what I have come up with so far.

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131398

ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131398

HIS H487Q1GH Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161292

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231303

Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136284

LITE-ON Black
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106335

Case/PSU I was looking at
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.342461

My case will be dependent on what has a good deal for power supply and case when I'm ready to buy in the coming month. But I would welcome and good ideas on a power supply and case. I won't be switching components much so case doesn't have to be great. Just nothing flashy or with lots of LEDs.

I am indifferent on brands as long as similar quality and performance (AMD vs Intel, or ATI vs NVIDIA, etc.) If anyone has ideas on what else to include/take out/replace in this set up please let me know. I have tried to do my own research a bit but want to make sure everything will hook up correctly and work well together. Also please let me know if there is any other information you need to help me in my decision.

For a PSU and case combo would look at this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129024
Antec is about the only case/PSU combo worth anything.
Would also check to make sure that the ram you selected is on Asus QVL list for that motherboard.
Don't forget an OS.

The case and psu combo's I had been looking at were separate ones that newegg.com had on special together not just a case that had a psu in it. Although thanks for the input that case looks like a contender because 500 w should be enough for what I will need I think. As for any OS of software I already have that taken care of. And thanks for the reminder about the RAM and mobo!

The Thermaltake case is fine, but I'd get an Antec, Corsair, or Seasonic power supply for it. Yes, 500w is plenty.

OK so after some more research and suggestions I think I have figured out my final build. Just would like some last critiques before I buy. If you can think of a cheaper/better option of the same quality let me know.

-I have checked and the G Skill website says the motherboard is compatible.
-My main concerns are is the PSU going to be enough? I am assuming so since the previous build was extremely similar but just double checking.
-Is it worth it to go with the ASUS video card vs another brand of the HD 5770? I have read it's good to stick with the same brands when possible because that's what they test their hardware with.
-I have read something about thermal grease. Is that something I need for my build?
-Is there anything I am missing or anything anyone can think of in terms of additional advice?

thanks for everyone's help so far!

Yes, the PSU is enough. Other good brands for ATI cards are Diamond and HIS. The stock heatsink will come with thermal compound preapplied.

Cool thanks so there is no real benefit to sticking with ASUS graphics card if I am using an ASUS mobo?

I just built with that board, and was concerned about RAM compatibility. I ended up using this Crucial kit, which works fine:

Ok well thanks for the info on the graphics card and the suggestion on the ram. I am going to stick with the memory I found because my roommate says its what he has used and it has good reviews. Also it has a cas latency of 7 instead of 9 which not sure if it'll even be noticeable but who knows. On g skill's website they say it'll work so lets hope it does.

OK well I changed my ram but it still says it'll work with the mother board. changed to
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231193
mainly for the reason they are 1600 even though cas lat is 9 I doubt there will be a noticeable difference especially since my mobo will OC them. It seemed like a safe bet just in case I wanted to OC and if not probably not a noticeable difference. Also did not want to risk the heatsinks on the ripjaw series of getting in the way if I go with a better heatsink/fan for the CPU later on. Ordering momentarily!

Ok so I'm still loving the new computer and thanks again for everyone helping. I am having one problem though. If I leave the computer on and it goes into sleep/hibernate it seems to unexpectedly shut off. I have to manually turn it back on using the button on the case instead of just hitting the mouse. And when it does start up I get the prompt that windows did not shut down properly and to enter in safe mode or normally. So I was wondering if anyone has a idea why this is. I have changed the power settings to put the computer to sleep after 1 hour, turn hard disk off after 1 hour, hibernate after 2 hours, and hybrid sleep enabled (not sure what that does but was default on). I am using windows 7 if that matters. Anyone have an idea?

Edit: So just manually put it into sleep mode and after a few seconds it restarted and came up with the above problem. Once I started windows normally I got the windows error message and this is the information I got. Thought it could be useful to help diagnose the problem.

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
