installation problem with i5-750 heatsink and fan
Hi,
I just put together my first rig today (Antec P183 case, i5-750 CPU, Seasonic X650 PSU, etc..) and all went well so far except that I got a "CPU Fan error" from the BIOS on bootup and then discovered that the CPU fan wasn't spinning. So, I tried plugging it into the CHA_FAN1 port instead of CPU_FAN and still nothing so I uninstalled the fan and heatsink to inspect it further. I realized that the wiring was slightly obstructing the fan fins so I loosed the wires and now the fan spins more freely, but I'm unable to reinstall it the unit on the motherboard now. The push-pin locks at the bottom of the heat sink / fan assembly are not unlocking as advertised. I did some research and found this helpful detailed description of the installation and uninstallation process... http://communities.intel.com/message/69298#69298 It's clear that the the PPLs (push-pin locks) are not properly unlocked when turned counterclockwise because they will not move vertically at all and the split-pins at the bottom are not being retracted but are instead locked in place. I'm not really sure what to do at this point other than to call Intel and see if they can help... Any other ideas? |

So you have the heatsink/fan off the CPU and when you turn the PPLs clockwise, can you then push up on the white part until it clicks?
If so you should be able to then turn counterclockwise and then pull up on the black part. here's a video of how mine behaves. Hard to do this one handed while holding the iphone! Video link Last edited by orbrit; 03-24-2010 at 11:39 PM. |

Thanks for helping! Actually I just figured it out after playing with it for a while. It turns out I had to turn them CLOCKWISE to be able to lift them up, and then turn them counterclockwise. Something must've gotten screwed up during the uninstall process and from the instructions I was under the impression they needed to be turned counterclockwise BEFORE being able to retract. Anyway, just user error I guess.
