Hey guys, I'm new to forums. On top of it, this is going to be my first build. I'm building it primarily for games, but also day to day things. I'm most worried about not ordering everything of the same compatibility as well as not ordering everything I need. If you can, let me know if the build is put together intelligently and if not, what do I need to do in order to improve it. Right now the extensive use it will see will be World of Warcraft, Left for Dead, Call of Duty. However, I don't want it to become outdated right away either. In addition, I'll be running Windows 7 for the operating system. Let me know what you think needs to be changed. For the video cards, although the second one is a better card, I feel like the first one has the better warranty, and seems possibly more reliable. Just let me know what you guys think.

Reviews were saying that the video card runs hot, but also that its super good. I thought the 3 fans would be fine, but I want everything to function properly so if I need more fans, let me know. I'm ready to learn, so let me know what sucks on this build, but please tell me why. Last edited by IBmikexxx; 03-26-2010 at 09:01 PM. Reason: Links Fixed |

Whats your budget?
For the video card go with Asus/Diamond (more reliable brand) Also go for a western digital caviar black hdd. Seagate has had firmware issues. No need for thermal paste, the fan that comes with the cpu will have paste already on it. Last edited by Tempest000; 03-26-2010 at 10:14 PM. |

Originally my budget was 800, but with the current setup, with Windows 7, I was stretching, and working 900. Thats going to have to cap me out though

I dont really know too much about AMD builds so I'll leave that for someone more knowledgeable.
Are you set on it being AMD or does it not matter? Also GSkill is a good brand for ram, but if possible I always go for Corsair. They are more reliable, and have good customer support if needed. Edit (hah was thinking it was the ripjaw series he picked out) Last edited by Tempest000; 03-26-2010 at 10:50 PM. |

I was just under the impression that I could get equivalent AMD set ups for way less than an intel. Seemed like that was the expensive route.

Agree with Tempest - but that G.skill is good ram. You could save a bit on the PSU, you don't need 750 watts. You also don't need another fan.

I wouldn't say equivalent for certain, I'm sure the performance is a bit slower for AMD hence it being cheaper. However that I do think with an AMD build you can get similar performance for a bit lower in price, but I'm not the best person for advice about AMD builds.

Another forums suggested this combo package with this ram included. Would you run this instead of the G.Skill?

For gaming you don't need the Phenom 955 I would go with an Athlon X4 and save some money for a higher end video card since your purpose is gaming, remember, gaming rigs are more about the Video card and not so much reliant on the CPU So Intel, AMD it makes very little difference in the real world.
The rest of what you chose looks good but I would definately look into getting a 58xx instead of a 5770 a 256 bit card will always give you better frame rates. I would also get this Power Supply, with the savings on the CPU and the Power Supply you will be able to afford the much better video card. Good luck

It seems like any Directx 11, 1g, 256 Bit Video Card is going to run me quite a bit more. I can always upgrade things one at a time if I feel that ends up needing to happen. But I would imagine one of the video cards I have listed will play the games I've mention flawlessly, correct? But would it be better to go with one of the current cards even though they're running 125mb, or should I definately look for something at 256mb like a 9800 GT or something?

You are missing the point, since this is a gaming rig, the video card is the main component in this rig, if you want to upgrade later and worried about the cost get the best card for the money and reduce your cost on the CPU, an AMD X2 245 Regor will do the job, you can always upgrade your CPU later if your needs change otherwise the Regor is more than enough for gaming. A 9800GT is obsolete, it was obsolete the day nVidia released it!

Mike, a gaming rig is very much about your gpu than the cpu as few people had already said. I would follow their advice, if your intent is to build a gaming pc.

I recommend Asus, Diamond, or HIS branded ATI video cards.
The power supply is excellent, but more than you need. At the sale price, it's hard to pass up. I recommend Western Digital Black instead of Seagate. That extra case fan is not necessary, but if you want a noisy wind tunnel, that's your choice. You don't need the thermal compound, the factory heatsink comes with it already applied. Those are my opinions. I don't do AMD builds, so someone else will have to comment on your motherboard/CPU choice. I believe Khalil has given you solid advice regarding CPU and video card choices. I personally think your system is well balanced, but Khalil thinks for a gamer, you need to emphasize the video card rather than the processor if you are on a strict budget. |

Well if IBmikexxx really wants a quad core, since that motherboard has onboard video he could buy that setup minus the 5770, save up, buy the 5850 when he's got more cash saved up. Only thing is that you won't be able to play any games until you get the 5850.

To be offended that I don't just do as you say is ignorant on your part. I'm just trying to reason and talk about things with you guys in order to build a rig thats good more me. I didn't mean to offend anyone, but I can't please everyone I guess.

You aren't offending Khalil - he just gets that way when he's frustrated and feeling that nobody is listening to him. He's a professional system builder who owns his own company with multiple employees and he knows what he's talking about. I defer anything having to do with AMD to him, he knows their product line as well as anyone out there. Please don't take it personally.

How about this?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.375959 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161330 and the Power Supply Khalil recommended: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-015-_-Product This setup comes up to $14 dollars more than the setup you just listed (including shipping), but gives you a much better video card and video card brand, while still keeping a quad core CPU and decent MOBO. IMO, that CPU is very good for its price range. You'll be dropping some on the AMD 955, but you will notice a much larger boost in gaming with that GPU. You're also saving $30 on the power supply. However, your power supply choice would be slightly more future proof, but the extra money is your call. Edit: On that note I will have to say the 5770 is a very decent card, so if you do also do a lot of multi-tasking, and CPU intensive things, and aren't worried about the video games as much as you are balance, then go with your setup. I believe Khalil made his recommendations based on you MAINLY gaming. Last edited by Jdorty; 04-10-2010 at 05:14 AM. |
