Hello all,
I had a question about upgrading the CPU on a build I did about four years ago... This is the MoBo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813127189 This is the current CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116197 This the CPU I would like to upgrade with: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115056 I'm just not sure if that MoBo will work with a Core2 Duo... The FSB is fine, and it is a 775 chipset, but beyond that im not sure. Or if someone has a better CPU recommendation for around $150 or so... I'm also upgrading the GFX card, but a little unsure what the best card would be for around $160 or so... I had looked at these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133266 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150478 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150439 Recommendations would be a huge help! Thanks!

GTS250 is obsolete, XFX makes junk I would avoid them. As far as the CPU, I cannot find any information anywhere that would idicate it being compatible with the E7500 but glc is the man for Intel compatiblity and he will let us know.
If you want a good current video card look at ATI 5770 if you plan on going to windows 7 otherwise an ATI 4870 is a great bargain and a powerful video card for the price range you are looking at.

Thanks Khalil, That HIM ATI 4870 looks good... it should be a good boost to this older computer... I currently run Vista, and don't feel like paying to upgrade to 7 for this machine. I have Windows 7 on my laptop and I like it better than Vista, but on this older machine, I don't feel like the hassle of upgrading. Maybe when I rebuild.
Still curious about the CPU... with the current CPU it would be useless to upgrade the GFX card. Thanks again! |

The motherboard only supports single core Pentium 4's. Any significant upgrade over what you have now will require a new motherboard.
Why do you want to upgrade, and what is your current video card and power supply? |

If you are not ready to upgrade your whole system I would just upgrade to the 4870 video card for now, even with the current CPU you will still get a huge boost in gaming, you have to remember 90% of the load when it comes to gaming is on the video card! You can always upgrade your motherboard and cpu at a later time. What power supply do you have now?

I wanted to upgrade to get a little more life out of the machine... Once im ready to chunk down the cash to do a new build I will likely use this computer as a media center machine or just as a backup. But for now I would like to get more out of it to play games and design work.
my current PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104155 The current GFX card is an XFX Nvidia 7000 series... bottom barrel they sent me when the original XfX card went tits up... |

Thats a good PSU when OCZ used to make them well. It can handle the 4870 easily. Upgrading your CPU to an E7500 would not have made that much difference in gaming if that motherboard had took it. You have to also take into consideration the chipset. The 925XE is substantially slower than the P55 and P45 Intel Chipsets so that would have bottle necked your CPU anyways.
I would definately upgrade the video card, that will make a huge difference compared to what you have now! |

Cool, thanks I think thats what I will do... upgrade the GFx card for now, then save the $150 from the CPU for a new build down the road.
Thanks for all the advice, very helpful!! |
