What is the particular mouse and keyboard? Model and brand please
Is there a switch or sliding bar to move over the laser? (if it is laser)

the mouse and keyboard are HP, from an 5 yr old pavilion. I believe the mouse is optical and both are connected through the ps2 connectors. sorry I think the model numbers have worn off but they were working just fine on the pavilion before the motherboard walked.
thanks |

That's normal these days. There's always power on the motherboard till you shut the power supply off with the rocker switch or at the power strip. It's so you can start the computer by moving the mouse and/or striking a key. You may be able to disable these events in the bios.
