Upgrading CPU, MB, and Memory
I am looking to upgrade my computer that I built ~4yrs ago. I am planning on replacing the motherboard, CPU, and memory.
Hardware That I'm keeping Case: Antec Sonata III 500 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129024 HD: Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136073 Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600JS 160GB 7200 RPM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144415 Video Card: CHAINTECH SE6600G GeForce 6600GT 128MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814145098 Planning on getting a new video card in couple of months The new hardware I'm looking at. CPU: AMD Phenom X3 8750 Toliman 2.4GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 95W Triple-Core Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103252 Motherboard: Open Box: ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO AM3 AMD 785G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16813131398R Memory: Crucial 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148194 The main use of the computer is light gaming, web browsing, and music listening. I am hoping the new parts will last for another few years. I haven't bought a "Opened Box" item before, are they typically just as reliable as brand new product? On a more technical note, am I correct in thinking that since the OS is already installed on the HD that all I need to get the new hardware up and running is assemble it in the case and connect the appropriate cables. Or is it a little more complicated than that? Thanks Last edited by ansimo; 04-25-2010 at 09:46 AM. |

What is your budget?
I would upgrade the ram to 4GB since you use it to game. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231193 I would also not use an open box item. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131627 This one has USB 3.0 and SATA III, so it'd make it quite nice for a future upgrade in your hard drive and USB ports ![]() Also this processor might be a bit more suitable for your gaming purposes. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103687 I believe you have to reinstall the OS. So backup your data before you do this project.
