Upgrade to i7

I'm looking to upgrade my current rig to something such as the i7 860, it seems to be the best bang for you buck right now. If you guys have other suggesting for a processor I'm diffidently open to that also(I'd like to stick with Intel though). Mainly I'm wondering which mother board would be a good buy. I've had good experience with ASUS in the past, but I really don't know nay thing about i7 boards. I'm planing on OCing the processor to around 3.8GHz, so I'm also looking for suggestions for some RAM and a good after market air cooler. Thanks a bunch.

The i7 860 still uses the Socket 1156 P55 motherboards.

What are you using this for? I assume gaming based on your current build.

Why are you planning on OC ing to 3.8 Ghz?
The 860 already hits 3.46 Ghz with maximum turbo, while still keeping the base core cock at 133 Mhz.

You probably won't see any difference between this and the i5 750 in most games.
I run my i5-750 with a Core speed of 166Mhz (up from base of 133) with a 20x multiplier (which is the max on my MB). This equates to 3.3Ghz clock speed.
This also increases my memory frequency to 1660 Mhz (G.Skill Ripjaws 1600 Mhz, the base speed on my MB is 1333)

It's only $80 difference but I've yet to see CPU be a bottleneck with anything I do.

I like the Cooler Master Hyper 212

Thanks for the info. Yep I'll diffidently be using this rig for gaming. Also what MB are you using and would you recommend 4 or 8 gigs RAM?

Any of the Asus P7P55 series boards would be fine, and start with 4 gigs.

PLEASE NOTE that neither an i5-750 or i7-860 is going to game any better than your E8500! If you want better gaming performance, upgrade your video card.

Alright thanks. My plan is to use the MOBO and CPU in an other computer so I was just going to upgrade this one anyway.

Ive picked out all the parts for the upgrade, but I'm wondering if anyone has recommendation for a good after market CPU cooler that will fit the LGA1156 socket. Thanks.

I previously had windows 7 OEM installed and when I try to install it now it goes gets to the starting windows screen and then never loads past that. Any suggestions of what I should do?

OEM products can only be installed on one computer, meaning if you installed it on your computer with the P5Q then you'll have to call microsoft and probably purchase a new key to install on your new computer.

That's not the reason why it won't install - it should get a lot farther than that.

Are you reusing your "old" hard drive? Did you reformat it or are you trying to do an "over the top" reinstall?

Note that we are seeing issues with G.skill ram on P55 boards - you may want to run memtest86+.
