Gutting My PC

So I'm replacing most of the expensive parts of my PC and thought I would see what you all think:

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813188055 - I'm not as knowledgable about what makes for a good mobo. I thought I would get one that was SLI ready, just in case I wanted to do that in the future.

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231180 - Has good ratings and is fairly cheap so I'm getting 2 of these (8 Gigs total)

Vid: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130434 - This one was tough to come up with. I like EVGA, but couldn't find a good, moderately priced one that had the option of going SLI later on. If anyone can point me towards a better option, please do.

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115215 OR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115217

I'm still trying to figure out whether I want to stick with Dual Core or make the jump to Quad Core. I'm primarily gaming on this PC, and I don't know if it would be better to Quad with slower speeds or Dual with faster speeds.

Anyway, let me know what you all think. I will be using a 550w power supply. All of them are still up for debate so if you have any better ideas or reasons why what I chose sucks, please let me know. Thanks!

ASUS P7P55D PRO LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131405

Ram is fine.

SAPPHIRE 100297L Radeon HD 5830 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card w/ ATI Eyefinity Technology
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102878

Intel Core i5-660 Clarkdale 3.33GHz LGA 1156 73W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Model BX80616I5660
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115219

If you ever want to Crossfire two of those cards, you need at least a 600 watt PSU with four PCI-E 6 pin connectors. One card requires 500 watts with two 6 pins. I'd recommend this:

CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

Sorry should have specified...I want to stick with Intel for the CPU and Nvidia for the vid.

Also, why the i5 660, rather than the 661? It's only $2 more.

EDIT: Nevermind, you answered my question in another thread...the 661 is for onboard graphics, which doesn't apply to me.

If you want Nvidia, put your build on hold. The 200 series is already obsolete and Fermi is not ready for prime time. The ATI 5000 series is the clear leader in graphics right now. I also do not recommend SLI with anything Intel, and I do not recommend EVGA motherboards.

Crap. I really can't put it on hold right now. I review games as Freelance writer and my vid card just melted....it makes no sense to spend money on a PCIe 1.0 vid card.

If I said "screw SLI", would that change the equation? Still want to keep Nvidia though.

You can buy a PCI-E 2.x card and it will work in a PCI-E 1.x motherboard. If your system was doing the job, just get a new video card so you can get back to work and worry about the rest of the upgrade later. If you buy a Nvidia 200 series, buy it with the idea of upgrading it fairly soon, for DX11 compatibility.

Just curious, what's your problem with ATI?

Well ATI for me is an unknown quantity. I'm sure they are a fine company, but it seems like they have always has odd little compatibility issues with games. I'm willing to sacrifice power for the assurance that my games will run 100% of the time.

Anyway, assuming that I want to stick with Nvidia and I want to upgrade now, should I be looking at an Asus mobo? I'm ok with upgrading my vid card again in 6 months - 1 year. Is the GTX 260 a good choice in the interim?

Hm....well all they recommend is ATI. I guess I'll take another look at them, but I really am not all that interested in switching brands.

I used to think higher of Nvidia as well until they ATI came out with their 5000 series. Your right though about the compatibility. Many games are written for Nvidia cards and tested with Nvidia cards, since they are the majority of graphics cards. Its about a 5:1 ratio of Nvidia to ATI cards sold.

Well the Directx 11 issue seems to be a major one. I guess I pretty much have to go with Radeon or else spend $350 or more.

Ok new plan...what about this combo:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...mbo394477-LM1A

Edit: Hoping to get a response soon as it's only a 24 sale.

That power supply doesn't seem to have good reviews.
Try this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.382707

Or this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.382613

If you really want that card.

The Corsair and Earthwatts are both excellent power supplies. The OCZ is questionable.

Ok here is my new outlook:

Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231180

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131405

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115219

PSU/Vid Card combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.382707

That puts me right about at 1K. It's $200 more than I was expecting to spend but I didn't realize that upgrading would require a bigger PSU. So an extra $100 for that and another $100 for the better video card. Either that, or I go with the Radeon mentioned above...sacrificing power and going against my grain (brand wise) to save that $100.

Also, is that mobo still adequate?

I'd go with that if you need a IEEE 1394 port

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131634
This one if you don't.

Well again, I want to have as many options as possible, including SLI. Those don't have 2 x16 PCIe slots.

SLI and Crossfire are a waste of money, only reason to having multiple cards is if you are running multiple instances of the games on multiple large displays.
One top end card is all you will ever need.

Current PSU is this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139004

I thought you could dedicate 1 card towards normal processing and the other towards AA or Physics or some other heavy tasks.

Yes but you don't need SLI for that, you just install a cheaper video card to handle AA and Physx. But if that is what you want then the motherboard with 2 PCI Express 16 is the right one.

That's very high quality and should be able to power any single card out there safely except a 480 or 5970.

Well with that combo and rebate, the Antec PSU will end up costing next to nothing. I'm fine with paying $50 extra if it means my power will never be an issue. It's cool that my current PSU is good quality, but I really don't want to be riding any lines.

There is always a deal at newegg but they don't normally. I am sure when you are ready they will have something.
