First Time Build, Budget £500ish, Please Critique

PURCHASE DATE: End of May/Early June

SYSTEM USAGE: Internet, Movies, Word Processing

Looking for a responsive. respectable system that can be upgraded gradually over the yers as my finances (hopefully) improve. A quiet PC would be nice!

Here is what I have come up with:

AMD Athlon II X4 630 Socket AM3 2.8GHz 2MB L2 Cache Retail Boxed Processor
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/176579

MSI 770-C45 AMD 770 AM3 DDR3 Support 8 channel Blu-ray Audio GB LAN ATX Motherboard
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/165438

Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz Memory Kit Unbuffered CL9
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/178943

Akasa 3U HEATPIPE CU BASE ALI FIN HEAT SINK PWM FAN
http://www.dabs.com/products/akasa [...] a%20ak-876

Antec 300 Three Hundred Case
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143854

Western Digital WD5000AADS 500GB Hard Drive SATAII 32MB Cache - OEM Caviar Green
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167819

Sony AD-7240S 24x DVD±RW DL & RAM Internal SATA Black Bare Drive - OEM
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164449

22"Acer P225HQbd Black Full HD 1080P TFT Monitor, 1920x1080, 50,000:1, DVI/VGA
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/22A [...] 01-DVI-VGA

Corsair 400W CX PSU - 12cm Fan 80Plus Certified Efficiency 6x SATA 1x PCI-E
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150985

With Windows 7 64bit on a student deal that works out around budget..

I'm particularly unsure about the monitor, pref. 22", I have set aside between £100-130 for this.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, many thanks in advance

Looks like you will need a video card with that particular motherboard. If not a gamer, you could pick up a inexpensive card from ATI. With the PSU you have selected, a basic budget video card is all you will be able to run with a 400w PSU.
As for the motherboard, we steer people away from MSI due to issues they have, would look at Asus.
Unless your going to OC, the stock CPU heatsink should be fine.
The Acer moniter is a decent budget monitor, a little better is an Asus.
For the HD, would go for an WD Black or at least a a Blue, they will be faster that a Green.

I would avoid MSI altogether and go with Asus

I'll take a Green over a Blue.

Here is an Asus board that is comparable and video is included.

For a little less, Gigabyte makes a solid board.

Both boards will support your previous selections, except the case. You will need a case that supports micro atx. The boards do cost quite a bit more, but video is included and the power supply you selected should suffice. You will most likely need more juice when you decide to upgrade the video from onboard.

Standard ATX cases support micro ATX boards.

Again, I would like to advise you to stick to Asus. Gigabyte make good boards but when things go wrong they don't back up their products like Asus.

The motherboard is excellent however Samsung hard drives are not known for reliability and tend to have a high rate of failure. I highly recommend you stick to Western Digital.

In that case I'll probably go for one of these:

Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB SATAII 7200RPM 16MB Cache - OEM Caviar Blue
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/124228

Thanks for all your kind help and suggestions!

I'd recommend you spend a bit more and get a Black instead of a Blue. Faster and longer warranty.
