So just recently I had my house broken into and me any my girlfriends laptops were stolen. Which sucked...
But it was a good opportunity for me to take on a project like this. So basically I'm looking to build something that could handle games like SCII, WoW, etc.. Player vs. player type stuff... So I would need this to be fast enough to game. At this point, I'm figuring what ever I'm going to be building will be leaps and bounds better than my old HP laptop of like.. five years ago. It would also be nice to load ProTools (high end audio production editing program) but that's kind of secondary.. not to mention I'm not exactly sure what you'd have to do to get it to run well.. Any light shed on the subject would be greatly apprecaited. In any event.. This is what I've got so far.. I'm trying to kind f keep on a budget but really shopping about value here.. --------------------------------------------------------- Hard Drve -- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136490 Qty. You are placing way too much priority on the mobo/CPU and not enough on the video card for a gaming machine. You will have a lot more stable build with virtually no loss in performance at a considerably lower price if you build on the socket 1156 platform instead of the socket 1366. You should also use a Black series drive, not a Green. The video card you chose is at least 2 generations behind.
Suggestions: Asus P7P55D-E i5-750 Radeon 5830 CPU's come with fans that are adequate unless you overclock heavily. Sorry about how long your post took to show up, for some reason it got caught in the spam filter. |

When I search for that video card a bunch of things come up... Anyone in particular you'd recommend?
What I've been looking at so far after doing a little researching is... Mobo GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD3 LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard SATA 3.0, USB 3.0, 3x USB power http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128412 Cpu Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115202 Gpu DIAMOND 5870PE51G Radeon HD 5870 (Cypress XT) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card w/ATI Eyefinity http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115202 Ram G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115202 Hard Drive Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136284 DVD/CD Drive ASUS Black 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 24X DVD Burner - Bulk - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827135204 Power Supply CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005 With all that being said, would you still recommend the Asus Mobo in conjunction with the i5-750? Also definetly need a solidified suggestion for a video card--I have no idea what is compatible with what.. Thanks in advance! I'm getting very excited as all this gets closer and closer to fruition. |

You can't put a socket 1366 processor in a socket 1156 motherboard. Look for the CPU and processor I mentioned, if you can afford another $80 an i7-860 is a good choice but it will NOT perform any better in games.
EXCELLENT video card choice if you can afford it. |

What about my power supply, dvd drive, ram, etc.? Does that all look up to par? Also is the mobo/cpu combo you suggested the best bang for my buck so to speak? Lets hypathetically say my budget is somewhere between $1250 and $1500 excluding the monitor, OS, keyboard, mouse, and sound. |

If you were to recommend a moderate range moniter, what would your suggestion be?

I was kind of thinking about this one --

::incoming additional newbie question::
Overclock'ing? I hear about that all the time as it relates to processors. Correct me on any misunderstandings or gaps I may be missing.. Overclocking is where you set your pocessors performing parameters to push it a little hard than the stock manufacturer default settngs at the risk of running your machine a little hotter? From what I was reading the overclocking potential on the i5 processor I was looking at is fairly significant. Now with that in mind, how necessary is it and does it deteriorate the life of your processor faster? Common sense would tell me yes. I also here about some "ice" cooling material in a syringe? I can't exactly remember the name of that but what part does that play in all this? Does overclocking always necessitate a individual CPU fan? Feel free to point me in the direction of a thread if all these answers can be stated without you typing half an essay. ![]() Thanks for all your information thus far--I'm close! Just need to get paid once.. or twice more. ::edit:: Oh and what's up with the multiplier thing? Ah.. Artic Silver--that's the name of that thermal stuff.. That basically just keep heat distributed more evenly? Last edited by liveloveshare; 05-13-2010 at 11:46 PM. |

I have no idea about the Hanns monitor, but Asus is typically recommended here.
You are correct on that overclocking will push your components faster than manufacter settings, however this will make the processor deteriorate faster than expected and could potentially burn it up leaving it useless as well as burn another hole in your pocket to buy a new processor. Generally speaking, if it works the way you exactly imagined it to on manufacter settings, don't overclock. Regarding this "ice" in a "syringe", the only thing that comes to my mind is Arctic Silver 5 compound basically what that does is create a better "connection" between the processor and heat sink cooler. However it's not needed if your going to use the stock fan that comes with the boxed processor because the thermal compound comes preapplied. Edit: Quote:
There are 2 parts to making up a processor speed, one being the Multiplier and the other being the Front Side Bus (FSB) or in your case (because you have a newer technology) it would be called DMI. Now basically you take multiplier x FSB OR DMI = processor frequency. There is much more to overclocking than this! Thermal compound of any sort is necessary for an operating processor. With only the processor and fan, it will burn up...literally start smoking in some cases. But basically yes it will spread the heat out a bit more evenly too.

Hanns-G is a very good budget monitor manufacturer.
I wouldn't worry about overclocking an i5/i7 - it varies its own speed according to demand. Leave overclocking those processors to the hardcore hobbyists who compete with benchmarks. Admin note - please use the EDIT button instead of multiple reposts in a short period of time. Thanks! |
