New Gaming Rig

Hey everyone, I sorta lost touch with the computer industry (shame on me). I've built my past two computer with the help from everyone here. I'm looking for a gaming PC for my friend. His budget is around 800-900 USD. It probaly will need a monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, but for now consider the budget minus those. I'm not too familiar with the new technologies, but from what I've been reading tonight, this appears to be a somewhat decent build. I'm looking for a bang for the buck PC here. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Here's what I have:

Memory - CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C7
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...X4GX3M2A1600C7 - 129.99

CPU - Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-215-_-Product 194.99

Mobo - ASUS P7P55D-E LX LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...0P7P55D-E%20LX - 149.99

PSU - Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W Continuous Power ATX12V Ver.2.2 / EPS12V version 2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC "compatible with Core i7/Core i5" Power Supply

HD - Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136319 - 74.99

DVD - LITE-ON Black 22X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 22X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache IDE 22X DVD Writer LightScribe Support
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106328 28.99

Case - ?? I'll find one he likes.. hehe

As stated above, under 800 is preferred. Gaming. Bang for the buck. Any problems/suggestions or feeback is appreciated, especially minor downgrades/upgrades for the sake of $$ vs speed.

Thanks in advance,
-nooblark

If you like nVidia (my personal preference), you can save lots of $$ by getting a 9600 or even a 9800. I just upgraded from a 9600GT...mainly because I could. I only had performance issues on later chapters of "The Witcher" and in "Crysis." I turned settings down on Witcher from the highest to just "high" and it ran great. Same w/ Crysis. Given how much the games rocked, I'd say that really wasn't a sacrifice.

Anyway, I noticed that 9600's are dirt cheap when I looked to see what I could sell my old one for. Even 9800's can be gotten for cheap.

I wouldn't use a 9000 series these days, they are over 2 generations old. The best cards for the money right now are the ATI 5000 series. I'd get at least a 5770, a 5830 if you can afford it.

That PSU isn't necessary, you can save a few bucks and get an Earthwatts 650 for 80 bucks.

Thanks for that suggestion (I edited previous post for changes). $879 is the total so far, no windows or case included. Know of any minor downgrades to cut the price down a little?

Yep, the Mb you listed is setup for crossfire. If your friend is not tech savy, and does not plan to crossfire; I think that board is way more than he needs. Here's a couple Asus boards that should do the trick without pci-e16x in crossfire.

Those boards won't really save $$. The one that is cheap is micro. But thanks for that suggestion, I'll look for other non crossfire boards.

I can only see very minor savings - if you can do without SATA 6.0 and USB 3.0, there's the P7P55D.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131404

You can save 10 bucks on ram:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231303

If you need to save more, you are going to have to step down to a dual core processor. For a gaming box, that wouldn't be much of a downgrade at all.

Okay maybe I'm missing something here:
aside from crossfire capability and a second lan
there is very little difference between this board:
ASUS P7P55D-E LX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131634

and this board:
ASUS P7P55D-E Deluxe
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131617

okay, so you lose:
1 SATA 3gb/s port
support for raid with 6gb/s hdds
2 audio channels
the option for coax audio and firewire

It saves $110 bucks. The P7P55D-E LX is ATX and the board supports usb3.0 and SATA 6.0 just not in raid.

What is it I'm missing, or not seeing?
Don't get me wrong it's your money, I'm not trying to argue if you want these other features, but no mention of them was said.

So taking into account all the input, here's what I have:

Memory - CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C7

Mobo - ASUS P7P55D LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard

PSU - Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W Continuous Power ATX12V Ver.2.2 / EPS12V version 2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC "compatible with Core i7/Core i5" Power Supply

After talking with him today, here is a few changes:
Budget for entire computer is going to be $1000.00 USD. This must include mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers. If it runs a little over 1k, that's fine. We still neeed:

Case- He'll find one, let's put 40$ aside for this.
Mouse- " " 20$ " "
Keyboard- " " 20$ " "
Monitor- Looking for high quality 19"-21". Willing to have the 19" to save the $$, but bigger is better.
Speakers- Any suggestions on some decent gaming speakers? Nothing super fancy. (Remember, we're using onboard sound)
Windows- I assume Windows 7 is the best to put on it? 32 or 64 bit recommended?

Also, glc, you said dual core is a good downgrade to save some $$ for a gaming PC. I'm not too familair with the differences between them. Would it be safe to say the quad is worth the extra $$ so the computer is faster and lasts longer?

Thanks again for the input,
-nooblark

The quad will be better if he also uses the computer for other things and wants to multitask. Look at Asus monitors, best bang for the buck. Logitech makes the best speakers for the money. Keyboard and mouse are personal choices (I prefer Logitech) as is a case (I prefer Antec and Coolermaster). 32 bit is most compatible, but it will only see 3 gigs or so of the ram. Buy OEM, not retail or upgrade.
