First Attempt at a build

Looking for help and advice, been reading a while - this is what I am thinking - need to be around $500 - mainly will be used for photoshop and Illustrator work, no gaming but video's and browsing. I have a 250gb drive, 320gb drive and an external 1tb drive for storage - using the 320 for scratch and some storage, 250 has OS (will be Windows 7 on the new build) Also have DVDRW and CDRW drive and 24" monitor so looking for case, PSU, mobo, cpu, ram and anything else I may need to put it together and get it running.

Put this together from Newegg (attached)

Suggestions welcomed.

To run Photoshop and Illustrator, you should get a discrete video card. It doesn't have to be high end. That PSU is way more than you need.

To me, that's an expensive case for a $500 computer.

I really like this case:

Antec Two Hundred(v2) Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

I just bought one on sale at Fry's for $30.

Thanks for the help so far

the PSU was part of a combo deal with the CPU so for $72 I thought it would be a good one to get - I have no idea on a case and thats one newegg "suggested". I was thinking to get that mobo and CPU I could unlock it however I see real quad core pricing is close to $99 so again no idea.

What video card would you suggest?

Thank you for your input.

With a $500 budget you are really going to have to cut corners on anything you can here. You will need to find inexpensive hardware that is not junk.

I would start with this power supply.
Antec NEO ECO 520C 520W Continuous Power ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply $55
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-030-_-Product

The case you want to keep under $40
Consider one of these...
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCateg...se&Order=PRICE

I would consider a card in the neighborhood of $150 or so. For a gamer the graphics card is usually the single most expensive component. $165
SAPPHIRE 100283L Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102858

Find an inexpensive Asus motherboard with a P55 chipset. Get 4 gigs of DDR3, dual channel ram. Pick an Intel i-5 CPU.

NOT A GAMER, David.

A Radeon 5450 is good enough for your use.

HIS H545H512 Radeon HD 5450 (Cedar) 512MB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card
$48.99
Free Shipping!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161321

PSU you chose on the combo is fine, it's just way more power than you need. This would be plenty:

CORSAIR CMPSU-400CX 400W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
$49.99
$34.99 with Rebate
Free Shipping!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139008

I don't argue with case choices unless you pick one that's junk. If you like that Scout, by all means get it, it's a quality case.

Silly question

This one says i7 so I am guessing PSU are not mobo or CPU specific as I am looking at AMD ?

It just means it has enough power to run a i7 build. It's standard ATX 2.x and will work with any processor.

What about this CPU?

AMD 940 Black Edition $99.99 after rebate
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...1&Sku=A79-1940

and if thats a decent CPU what motherboard - could save some maybe as I wouldn't need the unlock ability (at least I think I wouldn't)

Never got the build complete, just looked again with a $800 budget, wold appreciate thoughts and suggestions:

Intel Core i5 2300 (Sandy Bridge) $149.99 from local microCenter

ASUS P8H67-M EVO motherboard 129.99 local MicroCenter

OCZ Agility 2 60GB SSD (for OS and programs only) 129.99 local microCenter

DDR3 8GB (2x4GB) 1333MHz with XMS Heat Spreader, CORSAIR CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 79.99 after rebate from Fry's

COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power Plus RS700-PCAAE3-US 700W ATX 12V v2.3 Active PFC $59.99 local MicroCenter

Open to case suggestions, still kind of like the scout with 4 front usb and eSATA up front as well 79.99 local microCenter

I have 2 drives for data/storage and photoshop scratch (320GB WD sata) and an external 2tb drive, optical drives, monitor and also have Win7 pro 64bit. Anyting else I need or suggestions are much appreciated.

Revisit a first build

Never got the build complete, just looked again with a $800 budget, Photoshop, Illustrator, Printing larger format at high PPI, Web development (Adobe CS4) NO Gaming, no video editing, casual browsing (you tube) but basically a graphics build - would appreciate thoughts and suggestions:

Intel Core i5 2300 (Sandy Bridge) $149.99 from local microCenter

ASUS P8H67-M EVO motherboard 129.99 local MicroCenter

OCZ Agility 2 60GB SSD (for OS and programs only) 129.99 local microCenter

I have 2 drives for data/storage and photoshop scratch (320GB WD sata) and an external 2tb drive, optical drives, keyboard, tablet/mouse, monitor and also have Win7 pro 64bit. Anything else I need or suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks!

Threads merged, let's keep it all in one thread. Thanks!

I would not use a 700 watt PSU in a system without a video card, and I wouldn't use a Coolermaster. However, with Photoshop you really do need a video card, it doesn't have to be an expensive one.

I thought so too (video card)

but sales guy said the sandy bridge would be better than a lower end card with the motherboard I listed (he was on commission so thought it odd he didn't try to sell a video card? He said since I use CS4 it wouldn't matter, CS5 apparently has features that would make it beneficial.

He also recommended the I7 but for $120 more I wasn't sure I would see enough benefit so I put that into the SSD.

Thanks for the input again!
