$1000 Gaming Machine Advice

Hi,

I want to try my hand at building a computer for the first time. I need a tower and a monitor for under $1000 (I have keyboard/mouse/speakers/OS already). So I was exploring newegg and the internet, and this is what I came up with:

ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner - Bulk - OEM
$22.99

NZXT Apollo Black SECC Steel Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
$20.00 Mail-in Rebate
$74.99

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard
$54.99

ASUS MS246H Glossy Black / White 23.6" 2ms(GTG) Widescreen LCD Monitor
$20.00 Mail-in Rebate Card
$189.99

GIGABYTE GA-870A-UD3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
$104.99

SAPPHIRE 100297L Radeon HD 5830 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card w/ ATI Eyefinity ...
$20.00 Mail-in Rebate Card
$219.99

COOLER MASTER Silent Pro 600 RS-600-AMBA-D3 600W ATX12V V2.3 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active ...
$69.99

A-DATA Gaming Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model AX3U1600GB2G9-2G
$108.99

AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Deneb 3.0GHz Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor Model HDZ940XCGIBOX
$125.99

With shipping and after rebates, that makes $938.91.

Any advice/suggested changes?

Thanks!

Change the HDD to Western Digital Caviar black. Gigabyte motherboards are ok, but PCmech seems to prefer Asus. It is also recommended to use Corsair PSU, cooler master might be ok. Wait for GLCs approval.

Also please put in links to all the products so it is easier to check for compatibility issues.

The Coolermaster is okay. Not my first choice, but the sale price makes it a good deal.

Ok... so maybe switch the hard drive out for this one?

Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
$74.99

Boosts the cost $20, but it's still under $1000.

For the gigabyte vs. asus thing, is there some other motherboard you would recommend more? I was looking at a couple different ones in the prices range here. The gigabyte one looks pretty good in the comparison, but I dunno.

Also, as far as I can tell, everything should be compatible, but I don't really know what I'm doing... Could someone verify that? That would be awesome.

Thanks!

Gigabyte boards are good, but Asus has better support if you do have a problem.

caviar black is best for gaming. not a bad deal all in all.

If it's purely a gaming PC you could save some money on the CPU and step down to a dual core with no effect on your gaming performance.
something like this
AMD Athlon II X2 255 Regor 3.1GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103844

This would be a suitable motherboard option instead of the Gigabyte
ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO/U3S6 AM3 AMD 785G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Gaming is the primary purpose of the build, but I'll be doing some other stuff on it too... documents, internet, some programming, basically general computing stuff.

Thanks for all the advice so far! It's really helpful

That is still very vague. Are you a hard core FPS freak that playes games that require Crysis standards or do you play WoW? Naming some games that you play would help allot seeing that different games have different needs.

Ex. If you play WoW you could probably save some money buying a GPU that isn't quit up to date instead of getting one that would play Crysis on full graphics.

Regardless of the game, i would go with the amd athlon II that Orbit recommended, I have that cpu with a nvidia 9600gt 512mb and it runs Aion (cry engine2) with settings just below "high" graphics just great, I did have to upgrade the psu though. 600w may be enough to feed the graphics card running full out but I went up to 750.

Good choice. In my opinion, it's a good idea to have a power supply that is 100-200 watts above the bare minimum required.

Not necessarily - the "minimums" are based on an "average" quality PSU, if you go with a top brand you can cut it a lot closer. Coolermaster is "average".

Ok... so which power supply would you recommend? I don't actually know what I need...

For games, primarily RTS's (a variety of them), some RPG's, an occasional FPS.

I would also prefer that this computer be able to play games a few years from now, not just current games.

So for the motherboard, the one orbrit recommended is slightly more expensive, is it better though?

And would I notice much difference if I downgraded the processor to the one orbrit recommended? Not just now, but also down the road.

Ok thanks, I'll switch the PSU. I still don't really know which processor/mobo would be best long term.

Also, do I need to buy any cables or are those all included?

Here is an Asus Mobo that has pretty much identical specs to your original Gigabyte, at the same price.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131651

All the SATA cables come with the Motherboard, the Case has the cables to connect the front side USB/audio, and the PSU comes with the power cables for hard drives, Mobo, PCIe.

Long term future proofing is so hard.
That motherboard will allow for the latest USB 3.0 and SATA 6.0Gbs standards. If you start with the Athlon CPU you'll be able to upgrade later to the faster Quad Core if you need or can use it.
