$600-700 gaming build - help/suggestions please
So here are my priorities:
-$600-700 shipped, not including os or monitor -Gaming - I don't game a ton, but I don't want to be limited as far as what I can play. StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3 are in mind, but I also might want to play some FPS and whatever sparks my interest. -I want to put quality/longevity priority on parts that won't be outdated when it comes time to upgrade. -a 500 gb hard drive and cheapo dvd drive should suffice -I want this to be a system that is on a budget, but will not disappoint me when it's complete, and will last for a couple years, at which point I can make a couple upgrades and have it last another couple years. -While I say I want something to last, the main priority is to get me through a couple years. I graduate in the spring and will hopefully have more money then, so if having something I can upgrade will hurt the next couple years for me, I might rather just plan for a couple years to some degree. other notes: Power supply and brand names seem to be the biggest debates to people that have been helping me so far, and I think that's what I know least about. I think I would like a power supply that will give me no worries about getting the job done, and high end names when it costs a little to get a good name, I don't want to spend an extra 50 dollars or something on a part because of a name, but I am willing to pay a little extra for peace of mind, especially where you guys think it is worth it. I will be using a 23 inch 1080p samsung tv/monitor as my monitor for now, unless I find a good deal on something down the road feel free to suggest everything, cases as well, I like black shiny cases with mid or high usb ports (maybe angled) and some style, but low price is most important. If you think my budget will cause me problems with any of this, let me know, or if you think I can go cheaper let me know as well Lastly, I would like just as much for people to comment on the suggestions of others as I would like build suggestions, so I am not left guessing which of a bunch of builds is best for me. Thanks everyone, Andy |

Here's a starting point at around $700
The motherboard will give you the option to upgrade you CPU later, and already has USB 3 and SATA 6.0 ports. Case: COOLER MASTER Elite 330 RC-330-KKN1-GP Black SECC ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - $39.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119115 Mobo: ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO/U3S6 AM3 AMD 785G SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - $119.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131627 GPU: DIAMOND 5770PE51G Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - $164.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814103086 CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 255 Regor 3.1GHz Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Model ADX255OCGQBOX - $67.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103844 CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 - $109.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145260 PSU: Antec BP550 Plus 550W Continuous Power ATX12V V2.2 Modular Active PFC Power Supply - $69.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371016 HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black WD5001AALS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive - $69.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136320 Optical: ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner - Bulk - OEM $22.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827135204 The reason Corsair power supplies are more expensive is because they are more reliable and have a 5-7 year warranty to back that up depending on the model. The Antec has a good reputation but just a 3 year warranty, but by then you may be needing to upgrade for higher CPU/GPU needs anyway. Last edited by orbrit; 06-09-2010 at 04:11 PM. |

I myself am looking into building a PC around the same price range, however I would suggest getting a well made case. The case is going to last you years, and you're continually going to replace the parts inside it.
I'd suggest: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129042 At $54.95, with free shipping and lots of ventilation it's a steal. I've owned an Antec before and I can't say a single negative thing about their cases, they're sturdy and well made. Edit: Also, you receive $25 off getting a combo deal with the Antec power supply and this case off Newegg. Last edited by iniquitydm; 06-09-2010 at 04:11 PM. |

the Antec 300 also has a $15 MIR so it's really only $39.95
This combo seems very reasonable. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.410722 or for a 80 Plus Certified PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.410723 |

Build around these parts - help please
My friend is selling me an Nvidea GTX 260 OC
and an intel e5200 duo core 2.5 ghz for like 175 first of all, can I make a budget gaming system off of these that will run games well, such as Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, and whatever I feel like playing...fps maybe? and what would you recommend -I would kind of like if the setup allowed me to upgrade the processor down the road -Need Motherboard -I was thinkin 4 g Gskill ram, I have been told mixed stuff about this -not sure what power supply, how much should I need, I don't want to worry about underpowering if I upgrade -any case recommendations besides that coolermaster with the blue edges? I don't need monitor, OS, mouse speaker or keyboard. I want to keep the rest on a budget So basically I need a good ram, Mobo, PSU, and possibly case recommendation to go with what my friend is selling me. thanks in advance, -Andy |

Here is a link to Intel socket 775 processors to give you an idea of what your options may be later. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...atedMark=False Quote:
ASUS P5Q SE PLUS LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131347 Although you're limiting yourself to older technology by starting with the LGA 775 chipset. This will only support DDR2 memory, will not support USB 3 or SATA 6.0 Quote:
Corsair, Kingston and Crucial are good brands too e.g. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820134641 Quote:
Aim for around 500W as a starter. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...478&name=Antec If you know you'll be replacing your GPU with a high end card (like the ATI 5870)then go for a minimum of 650 W. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...01W%20-%20700W Quote:
I have a cheap NZXT Gamma which is kinda fugly but I don't really care what it looks like. Quote:

First of all, sorry for the multiple thread things, I kept thinking my other ones had gone down far.
Second of all, that Nvidea edeals newsletter came out, and I came up with this, I like it, and I was wondering what you guys thought. I don't want to change much around, because I don't want to get confused again, but if I could get it cheaper somehow that would be good. Sorry I keep changing my ideas around and disregarding suggestions, but I think I found one I'm pretty happy with in this setup: COMBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboB...t=Combo.406247 GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161317 HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136073 DVD BURNER http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106333 plus 2 SATA cables and a DVI cable - $10 plus $10 shipping Total = $689 |

All the parts are from reputable manufacturers, so this should last you a while. Last edited by orbrit; 06-10-2010 at 02:39 PM. |

are you sure that one comes with 2 cables, if so I'll get rid of them, and the other guys build bumps me up to a phenom X4, but I appreciate your help, I changed my mind on this build budget and direction wise a few times and came back circled to almost where I started, so that's why it worked out that way, that deal has some good combos and some good names in places I care about, people rave asus mobo's, but it sounds like gigabyte has a decent rep as well, and other than that I like this build, I would like some more feedback though and thanks again.

Name brands where you care about it?
Geil memory? (only 3 reviews, 1 stating it died after 40 days) XFX graphics card? High rate of DOA cards. Questionable support. OCZ power supply? Again high DOA rate. It's your money, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for |
