Power Supply

If I am gonna replace the power supply on this case
http://www.amazon.com/Antec-Sonata-I...6651886&sr=8-4

What Power supply should I get? This is my first computer I have built and I think the power supply crapped out on me, due to my dorms having big power surges, and me having a cheap surge protector.

Thanks

Use this power supply calculator to determine the watts needed.

http://educations.newegg.com/tool/psucalc/index.html

Then consider an Antec, Corsair or Seasonic power supply.

What Power Supply should I get? How many Watts? Who made it? Guide Inside.

Hi David,

I just want a replacement for the one I have. I need a 500w. Is there anything particular I need to look at when buying, like fitting and all of that.

As far as fit goes, if the PSU specs say it is an ATX then it will fit your ATX case. At 500 watts its not going to be a really deep PSU. So no concerns there.

The other things to look at are warranty, modular or not, quietness and quality.

These are both very suitable...
Good value http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-004-_-Product
Better warranty, quieter http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-004-_-Product

Corsair makes very good power supplies. I've used them in all of my builds (granted only three) with no problems. Also...it's a little more expensive, but I like the modular units since you only need to work with the cables you're actually using. This may make cable management a little easier if that's a factor for you.

Contact Antec and get your power supply replaced on warranty. It has a 3 year warranty. Then buy a good surge protector, I recommend a TrippLite Isobar.

I assume you have verified that it's bad by substitution? Try this:

Thanks for all the responses.

I built a system for my parents, same case same power supply. Had everything hooked up from my system to their power supply. Turned on, sparks coming from motherboard and also smoke
What did I do wrong? NOTE: THIS IS MY MOTHERBOARD, NOT THEIRS. Can I still RMA the board? What should I do?

PS: Their system works perfect after I literally fried mine.

Thanks a lot for the responses again, I appreciate all the help. I am stuckkkkkkk and feel like an idiot.

Being that I wasn't there to see exactly what you did, I have no idea what you may have done wrong.

I feel I may have shorted something out maybe. It was just a red hot little spark from the corner of where you put a ram stick in. It did it for like 3 seconds with smoke after.

If there is a small burn mark on my board is the warranty void and I am no longer able to RMA it?
