Need some advice for a Phenom II X4 build

Hi there,

I'm looking to make a new computer and I needed advice on my build. I'm thinking of using the following components...

ASUS M4A79T Deluxe

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

The hard drive (320 GB SATA), sound card (Soundblaster Audigy), DVD drive, and video card (NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT (1024 MB)) will be used from my current rig.

I would like to get any feedback from more experienced PC builders regarding any improvements I could make. I would like to stick with the processor I have picked (it has the performance/price ratio I'm looking for) but the mother board and memory could be changed to something else if anyone has a better or cheaper suggestion. I generally use my computer for video compression most of the time, although I do play Guild Wars from time to time on it.

Also, my current power supply is a seasonic 500W power supply. Is this enough for this build?

That is a great motherboard but it is dated, I would recommend this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131631
Currently the best motherboard for your processor is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131644 there is no major advantage for your use spending all that money so I would go with the one I recommended. The power supply you mentioned is more than enough for this rig!

believe it or not, the phenom II x4 is dated as well, the x6 core version is only 20 bucks more for 2 more cores, and would plug into khalil's recommended mobo w/o a problem.

Thanks for the help, I think I'll go along with the MB Khalil suggested, it's actually a bit cheaper. I did notice that some of the x6 were only a bit more expensive. I initially choose the X4 because I compress videos a lot and the price/performance seemed good and I'm on a budget, I used the data here to help make my choice...

I would love to get one of those i7 processors but they are just too expensive. Maybe I might wait a while for the X6 1090T to drop in price. Thanks again

What about an i5-750 or 760 with turbo boost? The Socket 1156 platform is considerably cheaper (and less fussy) than the 1366. The only difference between those particular i5's and the i7 is hyperthreading.

The Seasonic is plenty good enough unless you upgrade to a high end gaming video card.

That's something I hadn't thought of. Most of the x264 video encoding comparisons I've seen haven't included the i5 with turboboost turned on. I'll try to find one that does. Thanks.
