Greetings PCMech members. I am new here but definitely not new to the PC world. I've stumbled across your fine site in search of some help with building my next computer.
I've put together 2 comps in my life. You see, I know HOW to put a computer together, I just don't know what hardware coordinates with what. I always ask a friend or a forum site what matches with what, then I order the pieces they have linked me to and I put it together. Right now my computer specs are: 19" Samsung Syncmaster 941bw Monitor AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core processor 3.1 GHz 4 Gigs of ram NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graphics card 650 watt PSU S Series supports AMD socket AM2 SATA 36b/s Dual-Ch DDR2 800 Motherboard 1.5tb SATA HD Windows 7 64x I'm not rich at all but I've been saving money specifically for a beast of a computer for the past 3 years. So when it comes to parts, money shouldn't be a problem. I just read an article on the newest graphics card to come out. I want to use it. http://hothardware.com/Reviews/Asus-...Review/?page=1 I also want to have a much larger monitor. Something like this... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001379 I'm thinking AT LEAST 25" this time, if not 27" (sidenote) has anyone tried the 3-D monitors out? Are they even available? Do you get a headache after a while of gaming with them? Are they completely bad ass? Ok so my question is What all do I need to upgrade in order to use that graphics card I linked above? I know I need a new processor. Is my PSU strong enough? Do I need a new mobo? If I could get links to everything I needed that would be absolutely perfect! Thanks SO much in advance. I'm trying not to sound lazy about this. I'm actually going to college for Microsoft Engineering/Network Administrating/Network Security. It's the hardware compatibility that I don't fully understand yet but I'm trying to learn fast! Anyways... Thanks again for any help I get. |

You don't have to upgrade anything to use that card as long as that 650 watt PSU is a quality unit. Gaming is all in the video card and you don't need a monster processor.

Really?? I wouldn't have to upgrade a thing? Man that is a relief!
I was incorrect when saying my PSU is 650watts. It's actually 750watts. Just checked the box. This one right here actually.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-035-_-Product What do you think? |

That's not a quality brand. It may work okay, or it may go up in smoke under the load. I don't think I'd trust it with an expensive card.
What is the exact brand and model of your motherboard? |

CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139006 Can you open the case and look on the motherboard itself for the model? There may be a bar code sticker on the box with the model. |

When it comes to 3D - you won't be able to use that 5870 you want, and only certain games work with NVIDIA's 3D Vision.
I'd stick with the HD 5870 (great choice btw) and a 24" plus monitor. As far as how big of an LCD monitor to get, how far away are you sitting from the screen? I actually struggle a little sometimes keeping track of everything on the screen on a 24" widescreen that is 2 feet away from my face. I may be so focused on the middle of the screen that I miss what is going on on the edges. I really think that the GPU and monitor alone will make your PC feel like a different beast!

1200 bucks? What's the point? A $400 HD5870 will play any game on the planet at high res.

That's a 5830, not a 5870. You can get a 5830 for $200. 5870's start around $390.
For now, that motherboard and CPU will work, but you do need to look at a motherboard/cpu/ram upgrade sometime. I would never invest $1200 in a video card, and I'd be pretty hard pressed to spend $400 to be truthful. The improvements when you get up into that territory are just not cost-effective. I agree, that 8800GT needs to be replaced. *ANY* 5800 series card will make a noticeable improvement. |

I pay what I need...
even I have extra dollars I'll still go with 5870, dont see the need of getting higher than this.

I didn't read your original link and thought you were just talking about a single HD 5870 not a dual 5870!
I would definitely just go with a single HD 5870 @ $400 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161331 Seriously, $1200 retail for a video card? |
