First Custom Desktop, Any Tips/Tweaks or Reccomendations Welcomed.

Alright well here goes nothing! As stated in the title this is my first custom built computer that i intend to use for gaming -however- i don't want it to be just limited to gaming and would like to make sure that it will be up for whatever i throw at it for years to come. But at the same time, much over $1300 would be starting to push it with $1500 being the most i have avaliable to spend. With that said, here is what i have basically thrown together as of now.

(All Items found on Newegg)

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive $69.99
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16822136218

Power Supply: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power $108.99
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16817139006

Motherboard:GIGABYTE GA-P55-USB3 LGA 1156 Intel P55 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard $139.99
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813128425

Cooling:COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus Intel Core i5 & Intel Core i7 compatible RR-B10-212P-G1 120mm $59.99
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16835103065

Optic:Sony Optiarc CD/DVD Burner Black SATA Model $24.49
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16827118040

Case: (Pretty expensive, in comparison to some other mid-size, but im a sucker for flashy looks =))
Thermaltake Armor+MX VH8000BWS Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case $138.49
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16811133062

Video Card:XFX HD-577A-ZNFC Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card $180.49
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814150447

Ram: Patriot G Series ‘Sector 5’ Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) $111.99 Each ($223.99 Total)
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16820220435
(Planning on buying 2 for a total of 8 gb's of ram)

Processor: One part I am not completely sure about yet, as i read the guide here on PCmech that dual core was necessary and overall Processor was not as important as say a video card. So was going back and forth between:
1)Intel Core i5-650 Clarkdale 3.2GHz LGA 1156 73W Dual-Core Desktop Processor $188.99
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16819115220
and coughing up the extra 100 bucks for the
2)Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Desktop Processor $298.99
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...-225-_-Product
I really dont think that Quad-Core is neccessary from what i have read but just want some verification .

And that about sums it up. I will be using my own Monitor, Keyboard and Mouse so none of that needs to be factored in and with those parts it will cost me $1318 to have it shipped to my door. Any ideas or replacements or general suggestions on this build would be appreciated!

PS: I am Canadian which can throw a wrench in shipping costs and such.

Thanks in advance.

Drop the CPU cooler, the one that comes with the CPU are good and you won't void the CPU warranty.
Look to a different brand of video card like Sapphire/Asus.
Dual core CPU is good for gaming and for most other apps. If you like to have a lot of apps running at the same time then a quad core CPU would be what is needed.

Alright! I dropped the CPU Cooler, as well as the video card and went with the slightly more expensive
SAPPHIRE 100297L Radeon HD 5830 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814102878.

Which brings it up to a total of $1 222.

EDIT: Also, after reading reviews on the Sapphire Graphics Card, it is supposed to be very large and i was wondering if there was a way to figure out if it would fit on my Motherboard in my case well. Am really not sure how to check such a thing.

In form and size the Radeon 5830 matches the 5850 and, going by the buyer reviews, the 5850 does fit (just )

Quote:
Rating + 4 As Expected

Cons:
The inside of the case *barely* fits my 5850.
If you card is even a couple mm longer then my 5850, it won't fit without taking out/moving the hdd bay. I am crushing cables right now in order to get it to fit...

Alright thanks, as long as it fits all should be well.

Any other ideas on what I should change or alter?

Change that hard drive from a Blue to a Black. I would be more comfortable with Corsair, Kingston, Crucial, or A-Data ram and an Asus motherboard. The i7-930 is not compatible, wrong socket. If you want a quad core, look at the i5-750 or i7-860.

The 5830 is an excellent choice.

Yea that was the problem i was running into looking at the i7's. They are all (Or mostly all) LGA 1336 sockets so i would have to spend the extra money on a new mobo as well. Probably wont end up going that way.

Send a message via Skype™ to Nikon
the i7 860 is socket 1156, and imho the only i7 i would consider buying. the x58 chipset that goes with the 1366 socket is just bad. buggy as all hell and more headaches than.... well you get the idea...

i5-750 or i7-860 is the way to go.

Yea that was my general understanding as well. To add to the question however, i only have an i5-650 picked out, because i figured 2 cores would be necessary and it says it run at 3.2ghz with stock settings. Seemed like a good buy. Should i be looking at something past the Ghz?

I'd stick with the i5-750 or even an i3-530/540 over the Clarkdale i5s.

Read this article on memory latency with the Clarkdale (i5-661)

Okay, so those pages are saying that I should upgrade from the i5-660 to the i5-750 because of its ability to be overclocked and overall better performance? (Sorry for all the checking, just want to make sure i have it right )

The 660 is dual core and the 750 is quad core.

Kind of backtracking a bit, but what would you suggest as far as ASUS motherboards go in the $150 price range. I have seen a bunch but dont know what to really look for.

P7P55D-E LX or P7P55D-E

The LX only has a single PCIe slot x16
The P7P55D-E has two slots - x16 and x4

If all you need is one PCIe slot then the LX is the cheaper one.

And if you ever want to use Crossfire, the P7P55D-E Pro. Both slots run at x8 on that one when you put the second card in.

Which set of ram would be best for the P7P55D-E LX , i have read of the Corsair having some problems running at the correct voltages and not having the timings it is advertised to have while using the P7P55D.

Go to the Asus website and navigate to the page for the board. One of the tabs is "Memory Support List".

i5-750 with 1600mhz ram. Quick question.

Hey there PCMech. I was wondering about how well the memory i have chosen will work with my new build. I have read around and found out that the i5-750 does not natively support 1600mhz ram, however if it is overclocked to some point of another it will be able to run at that frequency. So, i was wondering how high i would have to set it and even if it would work right out of the box or straight up not be viable at all. Here is the gear that i will be using.

Ram: 2x - A-DATA Gaming Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16820211409

Motherboard:ASUS P7P55D PRO LGA 1156 Intel P55
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813131405

Processor: Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16819115215

Thanks in advance for any help given. Much appreciated.

Cheers,
-Tylor.

Threads merged, please keep all questions about this build in one thread. Thank you.

If the ram is on the QVL, it will also show a set of timings that work.

Alright figured that since it was about Ram being compatible with an Processor, through Overclocking the "Ram, Processor, and Mobo and Overclocking" thread would be appropriate lol. Okay. Thanks,

Alright! I think i have my build finalized:

Processor- i5-750
Mobo- ASUS P7P55D Pro
Video Card- Sapphire Radeon 5830
Memory- 2x A-Data 4gb (2gbx2) 1600 mhz (PC3 12800)
Case: Cooler Master HAF 930
Optical- Sony Optiarc CD/DVD
HD- WD Black 640gb
PSU- CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W
And since i have read nothing but bad things about the stock cooler on the i5-750,
Cooler- Cooler Master Hyper 212+ w/ AS5 Thermal Compound

Which will total at $1306 shipped to my house. Thanks to everyone who helped me along the way. And my last question about building it when i have it all here.

Prior to installation, what drivers will i need to install on a fresh CPU and where can i get these? I am planning on just throwing them onto at Flash Drive and want to know where to get them as well as what i'll need.

Cheers,
-Tylor

There will be a cd with the chipset drivers for your motherboard.
Download a complete set of current drivers for your video card from the ATI/AMD site : http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

You haven't mentioned it but I recommend Win7 64 bit for the OS.

Just lurking around lately and have become curios as to how the GTX 460 compares to the Radeon 5830. Would cost 30 extra dollars for the GTX 460 1gb versus the 5830 but if there is a big quality difference i would probably cough up the cash.
