Updating $800~900 Dream Gaming Rig
"Oh boy, another gaming rig!"
As much of a techie as I like to think of myself as, I always come to these forums for help when it comes to picking computer parts. This rig is one I compiled with the help of PCMech a few years ago, but for one reason or another, I haven't been able to obtain. I'm calling on the PCMech community to help me update some or all of the parts in the build. I'm hoping that during the time between now and when this list was made, components were upgraded and/or made cheaper. I was going for a decent gaming rig, priced around $700~$800 that can play World of Warcraft at high settings. I couldn't choose a monitor but I'd like one that's at least 1920x1080 if that can fit the budget. Thanks for your time! ![]() Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower - $99.95 PSU: Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W Continuous Power ATX12V Ver. 2.2/EPS12V version 2.91 - $79.99 Motherboard: ASUS P5Q SE PLUS LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - $99.99 CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - $189.99 HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3320613AS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" - $47.99 RAM: Mushkin Enhanced Silverline 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) - $45.99 Optical Drive: ASUS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner OEM - $23.99 Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 - $134.99 Mouse: Logitech G500 - $59.99 Audio: audio-technica ATH-AD700 Headphones - $93.47 OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM - $99.99 Total: $976.33 |

Get a graphics card that is not a generation old. If you can afford it, spend $200 on a 5830. Or you could get a 5770 closer in price to the 9800 you picked. AMD is ahead of the performance/price horse race with Nvidia these days.
The E8500 processor you picked is a good one and quite capable of being overclocked if you want to go that direction. Or you may want to consider an i3/1156 socket/P55 board. The 775 is still good but last generation now. Get four gigs of RAM, Windows 7 64 bit is capable of using all of it. 2 gigs is not quite enough these days. You could scale down to a 500 watt PSU if you pick a medium powered graphics card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371004 Consider something other than "Munchkin" RAM.RAM, Memory brand rating

GLC's little list there is the basic setup for any mid budget intel base gaming rig. good parts, would run most games at highest settings without a problem. Personally, i am an Nvidia fan, but lets face it, right now ati has a huge lead on them, price AND performance wise.
