New build, no video out, help appreciated (Photos in thread)

Hi all,

Second ever build for me, but last time was about 5 years ago and worked first time, so I'm of limited experience in trouble shooting.

As thread title, built new pc on boot no video out. I've followed the thread at PROBLEMS with a NEW BUILD? Try This!! and built outside the box, but no joy, I get the same results.

The setup is

mobo: MSI 770-C45

ram: Crucial 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz/PC3-10600 Memory Kit CL9 1.5V

cpu: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Socket AM3 3.2 GHz 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor

gpu: HIS HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 DVI HDMI Display Port Out PCI-E Graphics Card

heat sink: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Quiet (Rev 2)

PSU: Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 650w

Various other parts which I don't attach for out of case testing.

I've tried just putting one stick (2Gb) ram in Dimm1, processor, heat sink and gpu, then attaching power to the mobo, cpu and gpu only.
No video out, no warning sounds and am getting 4 leds on mobo to show CPU in 4 phase power mode.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.. I'm completely confused as where to go next.

Regards, Fuyoc.

Do you have both the 24 pin main ATX and the 4 pin CPU connectors plugged in from the PSU to the motherboard? Do you have the 6 pin PCI-E connector connected to the video card?

Hi,

yes I have the 24pin Mobo and 4pin Cpu attached. The PCI-E connector is 4 pin and is attached, (The attachment has 6pins in total, 2 of which are detachable and the insert to the gpu seems to only have 4 pins)

Apologies, it has 6 pins in, which are in place.

Also, have uploaded some photos of the out of case test i've been doing, just in case there are any obvious errors, really appreciate your interest.

Looks good to me - if you let it run for 5 minutes, does the CPU heatsink get warm? What about the video card heatsink? Are there any beeps?

Hi glc, really thank you for your help so far.

There are no beeps. I tried taking out the ram completely yesterday and there were also no beeps (iirc mobos usually beep to let you know). However I dont know if the mobo has onboard speakers or anything. Here is a link to the manufacturers page to the motherboard btw http://us.msi.com/index.php?func=pro...1&prod_no=1812

I've let it run for about 10 mins now..

The heatsinks on the mobo have definitely warmed up.

The cpu heatsink has not warmed up enough that I could notice it by touch, nor has the gpu heatsink. I don't know if this is normal because neither of them would be under any load, and since they are new out of the box and outside of a case I'm not sure if they'll get very warm at all.. is this normal?

Not sure if this helps either, but some photos of it running with the 4 lights on next to cpu (CPU in 4 phase power mode) and i'm not sure what that means.

Still getting no video out.. really annoying cos I just want to jump in to setting it all up in the case!

Does the front panel connector have posts for a case speaker? If so, hook one up.

Correct, it should beep once with a good POST, but if you remove the ram or the video card you will get multiple beeps.

Do you have a spare video card - either PCI-E or legacy PCI - you could use for a test to rule that out? If still no video, you probably have a bad motherboard or *maybe* a bad CPU.

Is case speaker the same as buzzer? Unfortunately my new case doesnt have a speaker. I have another computer (this one) and I tried connecting the speaker to the mobo, but no noise. I also tried taking some ram out of this computer to just test that the speaker was working, but no noise again. Very frustrating.

I might be able to ask a friend to try the GPU in his computer, are there any other lines of enquiry other than that?

Not really, you are down to testing by substitution. If you bought the components from Newegg, they will probably accept a RMA for both the mobo and CPU.

Thanks for all your advice, I will get my friend to test the gpu, if working then i'll just rma the mobo and cpu as you suggested. I will add to this thread if any development.
Thanks again.

did you get your video working yet? I just had the exact same problem with my first newbuild. Tried everything I could think of but then remembered my board was 2nd hand. So cleared the CMOS back to factory defaults by shorting a couple of pins on the mobo & hey presto - I'm looking at BIOS options on the screen.

Don't know if it applies to you, but maybe worth a shot?

Hi, this board is new out of the box. I did try that by following the motherboard instructions. I think I will try to take the battery out and reinsert it after a minute just to make sure it is wiped. I'll let you know how it goes.. thanks for the advice

Thought id make a quick update, swapped the psu for one that is known to be working, no change, checked all the connections, checked mobo for popped caps and discolouration, cant discern anything noticable. Swapped the ram several times, running only one stick in DIMM 1..

Ordered a mobo speaker because i'm frustrated.. will wait til that arrives. I'm fairly certain it's either the CPU or the GPU at this point, or both (!) RAM sticks..

At this point i'm packing it all up and giving up until the mobo speaker arrives and my friend checks the GPU in his machine. I'll update this thread when I have done this. Thanks for all your advice my friends.

Hi all, got an update here. Got a mobo speaker in the post today. Hooked it up and no beeps, still no video out or evidence of reaching POST. I'm assuming this means that the motherboard is not working. Should I rma it?

Thanks for any help.

Remove the video card, remove the ram. Still no beeps with either removed, it's either the motherboard or CPU, most likely the motherboard.
