Building new pc but it has been a while
I'm building a new PC and thinking of going with the E8500 processor and the ASUS P5Q SE PLUS LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard not sure what video card yet but probably Nvidia and no less then 1 gig.
Any feedback on the board, processor and video would be great if you would please. Thanks in advance! Mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131347 Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-036-_-Product I've never used raid before haven't seen the need to but maybe there is something I don't know that may be beneficial from using it if so I may consider the ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131377

Any reason you don't want to go with an i3/i5/i7?

I've read that dual core is better for gaming and virtual machines plus there is the 6mb of cache. I've seen with the i3's and 5's that they have like 4mb cache.
However, if they are better for some reason that I have not heard or read about than I am open to going that route. This could be a good reason. ![]() Intel Core i5-760 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115067 Last edited by larry1135; 07-29-2010 at 01:48 AM. |

i3's are dual core, i5s are dual core, some with hyper threading and some quadcore w/o HT, and i7 are quadcore with HT.
the cache they use are based on a formula that basicly breaks down to 2mb l3 cache per core, as this is about the maximum the CPU can handle at any given moment. not sure on specifics. this is why you see dualcores with 4mb, and quad with 8.

So, the E8500 would be better than the i-series since it has 6MB cache giving it 3MB per core?

No, you have to look at comparative benchmarks. The new core technology is more efficient. You can only directly compare cache amounts across the same core architectures. It's time to give up socket 775 for new builds except for basic bargain boxes.
The i5-750 has been rated as the best $200 gaming processor by Tom's Hardware. Being that the i5-760 is only $15 more, that's a no-brainer to me. I'd get that, an Asus P7P55D-E LX, and some DDR3-1333 or DDR3-1600 ram. If you must have Nvidia, get the new GTX 460 1gb. Otherwise, get one of the Radeon 5800 series. |

I did a little benchmark research on the E8600 (which is really close to what the E8500 is) on anantech and it did really well against the i3's but not so much when you stepped up to the i5's.
I'm really leaning towards the i5-760 as mentioned great bang for the buck and only $209 that also gives me many more motherboard options. |

Going from the E8500 to an E8600 is a very easy and reliable overclock with a stock fan. It's not worth the additional money.
Go with an Intel i series though.

Yep, the LX is fine for a single video card build.

The desktop that I have was built from scratch and I believe in the end it is much cheaper than buying a new one. However buying a new computer for me is much less of a headache.

That is a very good board and PSU if you are planning on running 2 video cards in SLI or Crossfire - or are planning on using SATA 6.0 and USB 3.0 at the same time.

I'm not sure I'll be going dual card or using the SATA 6gb but I like having the options for only $30 more. Prob keep it in main use for 5 years.
Here is the card I'm looking at going with I like the fact that it matches the board, it's a good brand + good specs. SAPPHIRE TOXIC 100282TXSR Radeon HD 5850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE TOXIC 100282TXSR Radeon HD 5850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card Shoot just checked the prices on the MoBo and it went up. Snooze and lose... Last edited by larry1135; 08-27-2010 at 07:57 PM. |

Could someone give me an idea of how long the video card is typically? I have a mid-size case want to make sure it fits.
Looks like I can fit 8 inch at most. Last edited by larry1135; 08-27-2010 at 08:38 PM. |

Well I found out the videocard I'm looking at is 10.125" to long for my mid-atx case so back to the drawing board.
Okay so, does anyone know of something shorter but still high end? Wish they gave the specs guess I could go to compusa and get an idea also I hope. Last edited by larry1135; 08-27-2010 at 09:45 PM. |

Okay I've run into a problem and I am at a loss. Everything is installed and when the power led and HDD led did not come on I turned everything off and simpley turned the front panel leads the other way around and what happens the led's come on but the speaker wire melts any ideas? Also wondering if I should have hooked up the eight pin from the power supply the mother board manual says I should and it says EATX where the eight pin is and the Corasair power supply has an eight pin and is an EPS ATX. I did hook it up would this cause the speaker wire to fry or do I have a short? Where might that short be? You are not connecting the front panel leads up correctly. With them all removed, will the computer start when you touch a screwdriver across the 2 power button pins?
You do need the 8 pin EPS connected. |

Okay so I'm not electrically inclined and afraid to stick a screw driver in there.
When I first counnected the front panel pins it powered on but had no led's so wouldn't I just need to reverse? That is what I did was reverse them when the led's did not come on and after doing that they did come on no prob but the speaker wire fried. Would the black be the ground and the red hot for power? I've always hated the front panle connectors they neve give much info in the ANtec manual. Okay I put the power switch connector on and left the rest off. Powered up got my bios update and can finally boot to windows safe mode (using hard drive from previous machine gotta get the drivers done for new). Thought I had the front panel connectors on correctly but did rush through it but who knows maybe there was a short in the speaker wire as the case is the old one and my mobo before died in it. As for now I am guessing. Last edited by larry1135; 09-19-2010 at 07:00 PM. |
