Build Cheap PC for Streaming HD

What would you recommend as the optimum specs to stream HD video without lag (hulu, netflix, live sports/tv broadcast)?

It will not be my main computer so I like to spend as little as possible building it or buying it (preferably under $300; already have LCD w/hdmi, Windows, or keyboard/mouse).

Also, I have 3.0-6.0 Mbps connection. Will that be an bottleneck?

Thanks for all the help!

If your connection drops below 4Mbps that could cause some streaming lag.

Under $300 is not giving us much to work with for a build. I don't even see anything in the Dell refurb outlet that cheap.

what would you recommend for a budget and parts?

I was thinking of getting a mobo with onboard video, 2gb ram, and Athlon II X2. Case, DVD, HD isn't a big issue for me.

Would that suffice to stream HD content online? I am not sure what's more important for streaming, cpu, ram, of gpu???

band width, ram and gpu will be equally important the processor can be carried a little by those so in my opinion could go lower budget on the processor.

I think you will want min of 3gb ram and 512mb of dedicated video card.

you may want to craigslist my brother inlaw got a nice desktop tower only for $100 I think he also had a bit of luck.

thanks. for the video card, does the gpu/core matter or just a card with 512mb? any recommendations for a good value card for my needs?

I've looked at craigslist but haven't found anything yet. Also looked into Dell Zino but I figure I can build a better one for the price.

Onboard video (as long as it has HDMI) and 2gb ram will work fine. If the board has a PCI-Ex16 slot you can always add a card later if necessary.

Sorry, I don't do AMD builds so I can't give you specific recommendations. However, be very mindful of the power supply you use, very few cases that come with PSU's have decent quality ones.

For only $300, look on Craigs list for a used computer.

Or if you can afford more, MaximumPC built an excellent home theater computer in the August issue. You could downgrade the parts and save some money. It does describe what makes a good one.
