8 pin ATX mayhem
i have the gigabyte P55A mainboard and a 700+ watt PSU that only has an 8 pin ATX connector. PC won't start with this, but is ok with another psu with a 4 pin atx.
how come? |

if it doesnt have the right connector, there isnt really anything you can do unless you know how to rewire it correctly, and i dont know so i wouldnt try it.

An adapter may be a solution but I don't know exactly what you have or what you need. Or get a suitable PSU.

Take another look at the 8pin connector, it may snap apart into 2 4pin connectors.

this is a core i5- it must have 8 pin atx. Im just curious why it isn't working, workarounds won't do it for me.

It appears you attempted to rule out the MB by using another psu. But the psu you used is a 4pin. Essentially this didn't suffice. So the question remains.
Is it the mb or the psu? Since you are able to at least power the mb with a different psu, I'd try the psu first. The issue that may come up, is that because you didn't use an eight pin psu for diagnosis- it may still be a problem with the MB. But, I would naturally suspect the PSU first. It is possible to check the voltages coming from the PSU-but I don't know how.

I'm a little out of my league here. But were you able to test all voltages? What about for the additional 4 pins? Shouldn't those voltages be there even if not connected?
Correct me if I'm wrong on the symptoms. 1.You can boot with a PSU that has 4 pin connecter. Although this PSU is not really sufficient to run the system. 2.Once the PSU with the required 8 pin connector(aywun 750) is attached, your not booting. 3.The PSU with the 8 pin connecter(aywun 750)tested okay with a meter. If you only tested the psu's main hots and ground - your back to square one. If all 8 pin outs tested good. Then I would suspect the MB. I would assume if all voltages are what they're supposed to be then you probably have a motherboard problem at the connector or along its path. |
