Hi all,
I'm close to saving up 800 for a new PC. I was almost tempted into buying one directly from HP but it would have cost me around $1,600. I've been using my gf's PC and now it's time I build my own so I don't have any parts to recycle. I mainly use the PC for Autocad 2010 3D, Adobe Premeire and Photoshop CS4. Mostly video editing software. I've listed the setup I thought would be good for me but the price is over my budget. What can I reduce in order to meet my $800 budget without sacrificing quality. I'm not a Pro user for any of the above mentioned programs, only a student. Jdeb,
So do you think I won't have any lag time with video editing and working on autocad 3D with only 4gb memory? I was contemplating getting more but I'm not sure if it really is necessary. I'm almost certain its not but I would like your professional opinion. |

4gb should be enough, and if not, im sure it wouldnt take you too long to get another 100 bucks for 4 more.
i would however recommend the i5, as video editing and autocad are cpu heavy things. the i3 should do an ok job though. best bet is to talk to GLC about intel builds.

quad core would serve you better. In terms of 3d in conjunction with a quad core, 260.00 more you could go with a fx1800 video card for a midrange workstation card for faster rendering times. In regards to your budget, the setup would serve you well and would be considered an entry level workstation. The components are all high quality. I too respect glc's experience and expert opinion, so he may ave better insight in regards to the i3 vs. and i5. My workstation in my signature serves me well for similar applications but I got a real bargain on it, to good to pass up. I was previously using a dual core 775, p45 chipset with the fx580 and it was very good. From reading the specs on the i3 as compared to my e8400, I trust a performance increase would have been very noticeable using the same applications. I gave that system (e8400, 4gb ram, fx580) to one of my sons and he is very happy with it and he is using autocad3d and the other applications you mentioned for school. |

I would use an i5-760 and a lower end general purpose graphics card such as an ATI 4650. Nothing wrong with those Quadro workstation cards, but your budget just doesn't allow for both a strong CPU and a workstation card. A 4650 will run that software fine.

I truly appreciate all the recommendations. I will most likely go with the smaller graphics card ATI 4650 and the i5-760 as mentioned by glc. As I mentioned above this will be my first time building a PC so after installing all the hardware is there any tweaks or special option features I must set or turn on in order for all of this to work, or do I just plug and play? I'll be running Windows 7 x64 home edition. Oh yes and this will be my first time ordering from newegg so are they good on shipping working stuff and how is the return policy? Any advice prior to placing the order?

Newegg are reputable and have a 30 day return policy.
When building the PC itself, just take your time. Common mistake is to forget the 8 pin power connector from PSU to motherboard for CPU power. Memory needs to be installed in certain slots first. I believe that on Asus boards it is slots A1 and B1 first - they should be the same color (light blue) You shouldn't need to tweak anything in the BIOS. Just boot to the the Win 7 DVD and go from there. Please post your final build prior to ordering so we can help verify compatibility. The A Data RAM listed above is not on the QVL. Alright, here is my final list of items I'll be getting based on the help provided from the previous postings. If there is anything that doesn't look right or maybe needs something better, please let me know. I noticed the computer case has some ports up top like USB, FIREWIRE, and Sata. Will this board allow me to use all of these ports without any problems because it seems so high and the cables would have to be long to reach to the top. Thanks for the help.

BIOS default should be set from factory. But just for 'S' and 'G's I always go into BIOS first and set for 'default' or 'no-fail' mode. Whatever it's called; the setting that says 'If you put me together right with good parts-I'm gonna boot'.
