I'll put something together for you, but by original SATA I'm assuming you mean IDE, right?
SATA 3GB and 6GB are backwards compatible.

If it is IDE you'll just want one of these. I alway keep one lying around for when I have to work with IDE devices on newer computers.

you were right on with that one GLC.

BIOSTAR TA785G3 motherboard $65
Newegg.com - BIOSTAR TA785G3 AM3 AMD 785G Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

bit offbrand, but i did some research and afai can tell they are decent lower price mobos. i double checked CPU compatability (newegg doesnt list it, but the athlon II x3 i picked out is on the QVL cpu list)

AMD Athlon II X3 440 Rana 3.0GHz $77
Newegg.com - AMD Athlon II X3 440 Rana 3.0GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Desktop Processor ADX440WFGIBOX
this tripple core CPU should be plenty of power for most any game, and should give that i3 a decent run for its money.

case and psu: i have to stick with the one GLC reccomended, its just a good deal...
Antec New Solution VSK2450 Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450W Power Supply
Newegg.com - Antec New Solution VSK2450 Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450W Power Supply $89

A-DATA 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model AD3U1333B2G9-DRH $85
Newegg.com - A-DATA 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model AD3U1333B2G9-DRH

about the cheapest good memory you can get @ 4gb

Western Digital Caviar Black WD5001AALS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive $70
Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD5001AALS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

the WD caviar black line is the prefered HDD for gaming.

and the budget breaker (by only $15):

EVGA 01G-P3-1370-TR GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card $229
Newegg.com - EVGA 01G-P3-1370-TR GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

you wont be able to SLI them, but you shouldnt really need it for a long time, and to be honest, this is possibly one of the best cards you can get under 250 bucks. if you are really stuck to a 600$ max, go with:

ASUS EAH5830 DIRECTCU/2DIS/1GD5 Radeon HD 5830 1GB $199

final prices:

with GTX 460: 615 + shipping
with 5830: 595+shipping.
