very old components...

/sarcasm

how about a little more info. a 'very old case' tells us nothing.

what do you want to do, and why do you want to reuse an old case? if its a branded case (hp/dell/etc) your most likely not going to be able to use it anyway

I am replacing everything inside of it and I have made the right room to place a mirco atx intel motherboard. The case is in great condition and has enough room to house it was just wondering for other componets such as graphics card, ram, etc.

Best thing to do is to put the mobo inside the case and see if the expansion bays match the placement of the cards on the mobo. Also, how many expansion bays have you?

One thing you may run into trouble with, is the back plate for the mobo. Proprietory machines don't always follow the "standard" placement of onboard video, audio and other ports; sure, the new mobo will come with a plate, but you may not be able to remove the one from the case as it may be soldered to it.

You can buy a new case for 20 bucks. Get rid of that POS.

LOL

Sorry, G and guys, couldn't resist. I second that opinion. You can save it for modding if you're into that, but a new case would be way easier to work with, and ironically, cheaper, both in terms of money and grief.

Now, what is your budget for the system (just the box and contents, without peripherals and OS), what do you want it to do, and do you prefer Intel or AMD (or don't care)?

I'd recommend an Asus over a Gigabyte, and what brand is that PSU?

Good luck getting the front panel leads on that case figured out.

If you are planning on using onboard video, the i5 has to be a Clarkdale, and the mobo has to be a H55 or H57.

I am aware of this and I have a gigabyte mobo which runs fine and I know asus would be better but I can settle for this and my psu is bfg so its okay for what I need.

3rd opinion on the cae.

I modified an HP case and made it work. Now that I've done it, I would never do it again. But it is doable.

The back panel was easy. Tin snips works wonders. Front panel connectors are a PIA.

If your spending the money on all new guts, then I'd say spend the twenty bucks on a cheap case. You can even find ones that offer free shipping. I wish 'I' wasn't so much of a cheapskate. Now that I have built a pc in a standard case, I realy understand the difference it makes.

You may have issues with using the Compaq case. The case wiring from the buttons and lites probably have non standard connectors. If the I/O holes for the motherboard are part of the case then most likely won't be able to mount the mother board. The BFG is probably ok if it have the correct connectors and no video card. Other wise would look at an Antec Basiq 500w.

Already removed the power button and going to order this power button should work with new mobo.
Power Switch - MountainMods.com-Power/Reset Switches-Bulgin Illuminated Anti-Vandal Switch - Red Ring

And either going to use that or when my friend buys it he will use his new antec psu 650 watt.

Recommend you stay away from G.skill ram with the i3/i5/i7 platform - quality control and compatibility issues. Look at Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, or A-Data.

http://www.pcmech.com/forum/processo...nd-rating.html Geil is not one of the companies at the top of the list. These ratings come from professional systems builder with his own business. Also, glc knows what he is talking about just as well.

You don't need Ballistix, and you don't need 1600 speed unless you plan on overclocking. You are safest with standard 1333 speed 1.5 volt ram such as this:

Newegg.com - A-DATA 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model AD3U1333B2G9-DRH

Don't do it, man

I personally would never buy an open box motherboard. I strongly recommend you reconsider.
