Having problems!

Hello, i have just recently built my first computer all seemed to be going well, booted up first time, installed windows 7 and for the past couple of days it has been running well. Recently though the computer seems to be locking up, the screen freezes but the lights on the front of the computer continue to flicker and the hard drive sounds like it is working. I have checked the lights on the motherboard and it is showing no errors (red lights). Another problem which i guess is related is that sometimes the screen will go blank, sometimes its just a page of brown sometimes its white and some times it looks like my normal desktop but with blue lines running from top to bottom!

I thought it might have been the graphics card drivers so i have downloaded up to date drivers but it has not solved the problem

Here is my system spec:

Saphire HD 5770 1GB
Asus P7P55D Motherboard
Corsair 2x2GB 1600 DDR3 RAM
i5-760
OCZ ModXstream-Pro 600W
WD Caviar Black 500GB
Windows 7 Professional 64bit

I can provide screen shots of the display when it goes weird if it will help.

Thanks for taking a look.

How are the CPU, motherboard, and video card temperatures?

Graphics card: 36 degC
CPU: 45 degC
system: 45 degC

Took those readings using speedfan and Catalyst for the gpu, but the computer was working fine at that time.

Uninstall Speedfan and install Asus Probe and see what it has to say.

CPU was fluctuating between 45 and 53 degC, but is now at a constant 45 degC
Motherboard is solid at 31 degC

2 minutes after my previous post the computer froze again, it happened in stages this time, firstly the start menu along the bottom turned white then the text boxes changed colour then finally the screen froze and i had to restart the computer by holding in the power button for 3 seconds.

I'd have to suspect the video card first, unless the power supply is doing screwy things. What does Asus Probe say about the voltages?

Im not sure what each voltage is for but starting from top to bottom:

Vcore: 1.13V
+3.3V: 3.42V
+5V: 5.06V
+12V: 12.32V

Do you think i shoud return the graphics card then?

Unless you have a spare card to test with, I would. Those voltages are strong.

Before doing that, run memtest86+ on the ram for a few passes.

I won't be able to run memtest today as iv got to work away from home tonight now, but I was wondering do you think it could be my old samsung syncmaster that's causing the problems? I also forgot to mention that I changed the bios to recognise my 1600 ram as 1600 and not 1333, If I have changed the bios incorrectly could this cause the problems I am having?

Playing manually with ram timings certainly can cause instability.

Send a message via Skype™ to Nikon
turn it down to 1333, then try again.

Ok well i have changed the settings in the bios back to auto for the ram so it is detecting my ram as 1333 MHz and not 1600 MHz which the RAM is. I have run memtest86+ and it has detected no faults.

It always seems to be text boxes or buttons on the screen that change colour first before the whole screen freezes or changes to one colour.

So it can only be the graphics card now then?
