Hello all!
This is going to be my first custom-built desktop and I just want to make sure that what I have is compatible and won't cause any problems. I did research before looking through items, but I'm not sure of myself and need somebody to double-check me! If anyone has other advice as to what other options would work better that would be great! Also, any options that cost less would also be appreciated, though it would be nice if it didn't take away from the build as well. Then again, if any better parts are needed, I ask that they not be too much more expensive than what I have here. I don't want to spend more than I need to. Being new to this game, I don't know what is a waste of money and what overkill is, so please educate me! I don't know everything and if something is more than I need, please tell me! Other information: I plan to use two monitors with the build, so I will most likely be using two graphics cards (or I was told that I would need two, pardon me if this is incorrect). I'll be using either Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, or Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I already have the installation disks for the former, but I just need to make up my mind. I may eventually game using both monitors. For now I just plan to game on one, watch TV on the other, or game and use the other for anything else I may need to use it for. I use photoshop a lot. Below are what I have chosen, with a link to the product description on newegg. Thank you beforehand for your time!

1. You do not need 2 video cards to use 2 monitors. All but bottom entry level cards these days are multiple head and support 2 or more monitors.
2. That motherboard does not have a floppy controller. If you want a floppy drive you have to buy an external USB floppy drive. 3. Recommend Western Digital instead of Hitachi hard drives. Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARS 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive 4. You do not need that CPU cooler, the CPU comes with a decent one. 5. I recommend Asus over MSI motherboards. 6. If you want 8 gigs of ram, buy two 2x2 kits, and stay away from G.skill due to quality issues. Recommend Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, or A-Data. 7. Rosewill power supplies are questionable, and 1000 watts is gross overkill. A 650 watt Corsair is more than adequate. 8. The new GTX460 1gb is actually a better card than the GTX465, and it runs cooler and uses a lot less power. 9. Save 10 bucks and get a Lite-On, LG, Asus, or Sony DVD burner. Now - with that said, if you can't buy this for another 6 months, you just wasted your time and ours. The market is going to be totally different then. Come back about 1 week before you are ready to place the order for another review. Planning ahead and dreaming is great, but this market changes on an almost daily basis! |

1. I'm perfectly fine with not needing two. I was just told that sometimes with one video card and two monitors, it could split resolutions or something.
2. Ah, okay. I'll do that. 3. *changes to WD* 4. Yaknow, I originally didn't choose a CPU cooler. Actually, I had different stuff before I posted here, but I talked to my friend who had built a computer for himself and he had some of this stuff. He said it worked, so I changed what I looked at. I came here just in case his advice wasn't the best, though. 5. I'll look into that as well. 6. Alright, I'll do that! 7. Again, I had something lower at first. Thanks friend, for telling me I needed more watts. .__. 9. I was looking at that one too, but couldn't decide. I'll take that into consideration~ 10. Alright! :3 Well it may very well be less than six months, but it still won't be an immediate order. I only work part-time, but I don't have any bills and I'm getting a check back from financial aid, so yah.. I sure will come back here for another review. I just needed something to start with so I know about how much I'm going to need to save! And since I really had no clue what I was doing, aside from having read a couple of articles and trying to consult a friend, I figured it would be okay to go here. I can tell I would have been over-paying and possibly not having a working computer if I just went with what I was told would work together. Anyway, thanks for the advice, even if it WAS a waste of time! |

Don't take me wrong - I really don't mind wasting my time if it does help you in some way.
What's going to change the most in the next 6 months is the video card market. |

So if I was to buy pieces one at a time, I should buy the video card last?

Do not buy them pieces at a time - save your money and buy it all at once. Your money will go farther this way.

GLC, as usual / always?
, is correct. Even though in my observation advances in technology and value for the dollar don't progress at the break neck speed and as dramatically as at one time, not only should prices come down for what you would buy today, you would get more for the same money. Not only that, but you would be giving up part of your warranty on items and return privileges to the store should they not work. Besides, maybe not being able to buy the products until you have enough money to buy them all might be incentive to save faster. ![]() I think usually, people already have some desired price range in mind first, but understandably you might not know whether it is feasible or not. Even though technology changes, people could probably tell now a reasonable price range for what you want to do so you will have some idea on how much to save.

You're right, that probably would make me want to save faster! O:
I'll definitely wait to buy everything I need, then. I'm probably going to save up about 2,000 before I actually start buying the stuff I need, including a monitor and speakers, etc. I did a search on gaming/multitasking builds, but all it did was confuse me. All I got out of it was that I should expect to pay around 1500$. I'm surprised I made it as far as getting a whole list of parts together. |

For the bulky items like monitors and cases, could check for sales at local electronic(Microcenter)/office supply places(Office Depot/Office Max). This could save you freight costs from online retailers.
