Building a gaming PC

I am planning on building a new gaming computer!
What this computer will be used to is mostly:
First person shooter gamer, MMOs, Several programs used at once (game recorders), storage for music - pictures - movies etc, photoediting.

Budget is about 3000$
(might be a litle bit more / less due to currency changes)

I have looked on the following parts:

PC Case : Antec Twelve Hundred Big Tower Black
This one should be fine...?

Hard Drive : Intel X25-M SSD 80GB 2,5", Retail
Storage Drive : Western Digitial Caviar® Green 2TB
I would like to try out the SSD harddrive for OS and system files, but is it worht the money?

CD-ROM Drive : Sony Optiarc DVD±RW burner AD-7240S
I hardly use CD-rooms, but will this one work properly?

Processor : Intel Core™ i7 Quad Processor i7-930
I am still wondering if AMD X6 is a good choice, however it seems I7 is still on top, am I correct?

Motherboard : ASUS Maximus III Formula, P55
This seems like a good motherboard, however I do not know much about different types of motherboards, is there a better choice?

Memory Modules : Corsair Dominator DHX DDR3 1333MHz 16GB
Will this work on my mother board, and will I need 16gb?

Power Supply : Corsair HX 850W PSU
Not quite sure if 850W is suited for this, please let me know if its to much.

Video Card : I have still not decided on a video card, as I read that its smartest to take the "best" one available, does anyone have any suggestions?

the i7s are more powerful from a raw power standpoint, but imo the final result is really dependant on what other parts are used and how they work together.

the x6 amd cpu is a great unit, and my personal favorite. either way, both of these are overkill in a gaming machine.

you dont want a caviar green for a HDD to install your games on, use a caviar black. the 1tb version also supports sata 6gbp/s
caviar greens are happiest as a backup drive.

that board is completely overkill for you, unless you are going the enthusiast overclocker route, as which you would need some other things added to this list. with your budget, you could build one mean machine. i suggest a 'standard' asus p7p55d board, let GLC get more specific on this.

no, you dont need that much ram... im not even sure any home user would need that much ram. 4 gb is plenty.

if your going to go with nvidia graphics, i would say go all out 2x gtx480 considering your budget. no game out needs that, but hey, youll be covered for years!

perhaps a pair of gtx460. they are based on a better version of fermi, and thus run cooler, and use less power, but are better performers than the gtx 480 when you have 2.

or you could check this one out:
asus ares (5870 x 2)
It's Not A Radeon HD 5970. It's A Radeon HD 5870 X2 : Asus ARES: Is This The One Graphics Card To Rule Them All?

Are you certain you want to spend $3000? You can get a very fast computer for half that price. If you do indeed want to spend this much, does a multi-monitor setup interest you?

Your motherboard and CPU are incompatible - different sockets. Here is a build that would be at my top end recommendation without going overboard:

You'll need to add a heatsink & fan for that CPU...that model doesn't come with one.

Thanks for all the help! I am currently looking on the prices at different online stores (newegg does not ship internationaly )

I have 3 questions left that I hope you can help me with:
1)Will windows 7 professional 64bit work on this machine?

2)Do I have to buy both:
Newegg.com - ZALMAN CNPS9900ALED 120mm 2 Ball Low-noise Blue LED CPU Cooler

and

Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 92mm Fluid Dynamic CPU Cooler

or is it enough with only one of them?

3)Is there a need for a soundcard, and if there is do you have a recommendation?

Looking Around

I have been looking at online stores within my country (customs are quite expensive here), and I managed to find the following items:

Antec Twelve Hundred
Corsair HX 850W PSU
INTEL Core i7 875K - 2,93 GHz - Cache L3 8 MB - Socket LGA 1156 (box version)<- what does this mean?
Corsair Dominator DHX+ DDR3 1600MHz 8GB Kit w/4x 2GB ( could not find A-Data gaming series)
Crucial RealSSD C300 2,5" 128GB SATA 6 Gb/s (the 256gb costs nearly 1000$, the 128gb one is a litle less than 500$, if its possible, can I use the WD Black Caviar as a main harddrive?)
Western Digital WD Caviar Black WD2001FASS (2tb)
HIS Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 iCooler V
LiteOn iHDS118 (dvd)

These are the ones closest to the recommendations I recieved, however some components have been changed. Is there any parts that wont get along here?

Antec Twelve Hundred Great Case

Corsair HX 850W PSU Great Power Supply

INTEL Core i7 875K - 2,93 GHz - Cache L3 8 MB - Socket LGA 1156 (box version)<- what does this mean? This CPU is overkill for gaming! box means it comes with the fan and heatsink!

Corsair Dominator DHX+ DDR3 1600MHz 8GB Kit w/4x 2GB ( could not find A-Data gaming series) Great Memory

Crucial RealSSD C300 2,5" 128GB SATA 6 Gb/s (the 256gb costs nearly 1000$, the 128gb one is a litle less than 500$, if its possible, can I use the WD Black Caviar as a main harddrive?) Yes and SSD is currently a waste of money!

Western Digital WD Caviar Black WD2001FASS (2tb) Awesome Hard Drive

HIS Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 iCooler V Great Video Card

LiteOn iHDS118 (dvd) Good Optical Drive

I would go with the i5-750 instead of that i7 and get the king of video cards if it is available to you the ATI 5970 but stick to HIS, Asus or Diamond!!!

Good luck!

the 'king' of videocards would be an asus ares, which is actually 2 full 5870s in xfire on a single pcb, retail is like 1500 USD. the 5970 is toned down a bit, but yeah. anyhow...

no you dont need both of those cpu coolers, just one will fit.

Yeah that Ares is something else but for the most part the 5970 is the king of video cards whether Ares or not!

I live in Norway and my budget is set to be 18000 NOK. Max.

I tok a look at the 5970 which costs about 4857NOK (minimum)

If I drop the SSD drive ill save 2541 NOK.

1USD$ = about 6.1 NOK (Norwegian Kroner)

Leaving some room for the 5970 even though its quite expensive.

It is expensive but man does it game! I have been using dual GPUs for several years now, before I got the 5970 I was on the 4870x2, you can't beat the performance of dual GPU card. You go max everything all the time and never have to worry about lag or whatever!

Not in this specific case - the 875K does not come with a cooler as it's marketed to overclockers.

Okay - I'm not going to try to wade through sites in Norwegian, so here's some suggestions:

1. Look at the i7-870. Same speed as the 875K but without the unlocked multiplier. It comes with a cooler.

2. The 5870 1gb is the most cost-effective from a performance standpoint. If you find the need for more gaming graphics performance, you can get a 2nd one and Crossfire it - the Corsair 850 can handle it.

3. Instead of the SSD, I'd get one of the SATA 6.0 WD Blacks for a system drive - currently available in 640gb and 1tb models. If you want an additional large data drive, the 2tb Black is a great choice.

4. Win 7 Pro will work, but do you NEED it?

5. The onboard sound these days is very good, but you can always add a sound card later if necessary.

6. If you need to cut costs, the first place to save would be with the CPU - downgrade it to a i5-760.

I have been reading the posts so far, and made this decision:

Removing the SSD.

Changing CPU to I7-870 Boxed.

Removing the WD 2tb Black

Adding the WD 6 Black

I have the ability to obtain a free copy of Windows 7 Pro (friends at IT-software)

I will be posting an update in not to long with what I have listed, aswell as the cost per product.

Should I plan on buying the 5970, or should I wait and upgrade with another 5870 if needed?

I still think you are better off with the i5-760 like glc suggested, for gaming the i7 will do nothing to enhance your experience but it is your money!
Windows 7 Pro is only useful to you if you plan on joining a domain otherwise save your money and get Home Premium, if you are getting 8GB memory you will need the 64 bit OS or you can't use more than 3.2 gigs!
If you can afford the 5970 then yes it is worth it all day long.

I kinda think if you are going to be spending this much money then keep the i-7 870 processor because it has multi-threading and is very overclockable. The price difference is only $70, for a $2300 rig...that's almost nothing percentage wise. There are plenty of applications out there, outside of games, that are CPU dependent.

Buy yourself an excellent bang for the buck monitor....or two or three and run your games under Eyefinity

Newegg.com - ASUS VW266H Black 25.5" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 (ASCR 20000:1) Built in Speakers w/ component connector

Games that are Eyefinity "validated" and "ready"....

Whats Eyefinity?....

Asus Radeon

Thank you for pointing out that I have the "wrong" 5970

I will be using the

ASUS Radeon HD5970 PCI-E 2.1, 2GB DDR5, 2xDVI, DisplayPort, HDMI Adapter, DirectX 11 (EAH5970/G/2DIS/2GD5)

If this one is correct?

And I will take a look at eyefinity, as it seems very cool with multi display technology!

Do make sure all the required PCI-E power connectors are hooked up to the Video Card before you boot up. If you do not, there is a chance the Card will go out of Crossfire sync, because you may only power up one of the GPUs.
If that happens you will end up having to RMA it back to Asus.
