No video

Hi, First post here. I built a gaming pc strictly to run Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway. Worked OK for quite a while, then won't give any video on boot up.

I thought it was the mb, got a new mb and still no video.

Previous mb was Asus P5GC-MX/1333
Core 2 Duo E8400 3gig cpu
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 hd
2 gig Corsair ddr2 ram
Asus EN 8400 GS Silent video card
generic Eagle DR A 300 ATX power supply
generic dvd drive

I initially swapped monitors - same problem
I swapped video cards - same problem
I tried using onboard video - same problem

Now I swapped out the MB with a new Asus P5G41 -M LE/CSM MB
Same problem, the monitor comes on but no video signal, screen stays black.

Looking for the next troubleshoot! Power supply? CPU? Vid Cable?

Thanks if anybody can help!
Dan

You more than likely killed that video card. You have a nice CPU, motherboard and ram but the power supply and video card are by no means gaming material.

You definitely want a different PSU. Try the old card with the new PSU. If it does not work then chances are the old PSU killed it with too much of a voltage drop.

Buy a proper power supply and video card. An 8400GS is not a proper video card for gaming and that power supply is a train wreck waiting to happen (it may have already happened). Use the following troubleshooting procedure:

PROBLEMS with a NEW BUILD? Try This!!

This power supply is relatively inexpensive and will power all low and midrange video cards:

Newegg.com - Antec Basiq BP500U 500W Continuous Power ATX12V Version 2.01 Active PFC Power Supply

See what you have left in your budget for a video card and pick one of these:

Thank you guys! That video card was just adequate to run BIA HH. Budget is a factor, but gotta have a gaming pc. I'll try a new power supply first.

I got that Antec power supply already and hooked everything up. Same problem! No video signal. So now I have the new MB, new power supply, and running out of clues. I hooked a different monitor up to my video card, ng, and then took the card out and tried hooking it up to onboard video. ng. Any other advice what to do next? A couple of previous times this rig sputtered before it died, in other words the startup screen froze a couple of times but I was able to reboot. CPU? Hard drive? I have adequate cooling. Thanks, I'm asking here because it's obvious I'm using parts swapping to troubleshoot.

Hey,
I followed that proceedure exactly, and now I've got some text on the monitor! It says:
Reboot and select proper boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key

Should I connect keyboard, mouse, and hard drive next? Also, should I try to install the hard drive intact, or should I format it for a clean install of XP? Just wondering about the old MB drivers being on the HD, etc.

THANKS FOR GREAT ADVICE!
Dan

The machine boots now. It would not boot when I put in the 2nd stick of memory. I never had memory go bad on me before and didn't think it would stop the pc from booting. This is corsair 1 gig sticks.

Memory goes bad all the time, regardless of brand. Glad you figured out what was wrong and now the machine is booting.

How long ago did you buy the Corsair? A lot of thier ram is warrantied. If you bought if off Newegg they may have a record of it.

If Mwave won't exchange it, Corsair will.

Hello,
A couple of memory questions, the memory that went bad is:
CORSAIR XMS2 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory Model CM2X1024-6400

I emailed Corsair and got a response that said I have to request an RMA. I requested the RMA and got a response, "We approved your RMA, now you have to request an RMA #. If you don't hear from us in 1 business day, keep begging."
Well, I'm waiting for the RMA so we'll see.
My question is, if I get too much of a runaround, what is a good alternative to Corsair brand? There were a lot of reviews on this specific memory and quite a few people had the same problem with it as me. 4 out of 5 on about 150 reviews though.
Just looking for 2 gigs of memory that will be good for my gaming rig.

Corsair IS a good brand. You were just unlucky. Keep trying with Corsair and hopefully you will get it replaced for free.

Here is what our expert builder says is good RAM...
RAM, Memory brand rating

You may want to consider 4 Gigs of RAM if your budget allows for it. With 2 Gigs you may find your applications periodically accessing the hard drive instead of the RAM, which is slower. If you do go this route, buy another two gigs of identical RAM to whatever Corsair replaces yours with.

For future memory purchases, since you're asking for an alternative, go with Crucial.

Thanks again for replies. Is there a consideration about max memory with XP home? In other words can XP handle more than 2 gigs memory? How do I know if the XP home version I'm using is 32bit or 64 bit? Thanks again!

There were no 64-bit versions of XP Home. I'd put no more than 3 GB in that machine. Any 32-bit OS won't recognise more than 4, and will use less than that.

Nevertheless, the most cost-effective ram setup for dual channel motherboards is a 2x2 gb kit. XP will use all it can.

Thanks again, this is a great site! Corsair replaced the memory! Considering how things go with corporations, the whole process was EXCELLENT! I'm emailing the customer service rep with thanks and to let them know they have a very happy customer.

Memory is in, but some issues are occuring. Maybe the new mb. Game is running slow. Couple of other weird glitches have occurred. BIA Hell's Highway went to loading and just hung there. Also when I quit the game the whole system restarted rather than go back to the desktop. Maybe this new mb doesn't like the old video card. Also I haven't connected to the internet yet to even register xp sp3 and get any updates.. hope they let me slide since they already detect the changes.

You have disabled "Automatically Restart" under Startup and Recovery in Advanced System Settings, yes?

If we could get a BSOD andor a minidump file, we'd be better able to diagnose the issue.
