Nudder new guy.

Hey all, thought i'd introduce myself before i start going out on the threads. i'm in western NC and i build/add on/modify my computer for a hobby. i find it amazing how such little changes make such huge changes. i've upgraded through the years and right now i'm sitting with an ASUS M32A32-MVP mobo, 8 Gb's RAM, AMD Phenom 9850 Quad Core Processor Black Edition, ATI Radeon 4650 and Windows Vista Ultimate. I'm also using a 500mb Western Digital HD and a 1TB Seagate drive which i now regret buying.

i'm pretty happy with all that i have except for my seagate drive which has started giving me errors only two weeks after buying it (outside of the best buy return dates) I learned my lesson buying it and i'm waiting for it to go out any day now.

Can i get some opinions on these two drives?

Western Digital WD1002FAEX Caviar Black Hard Drive - 1TB, 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gbs at TigerDirect.com

Western Digital WD1002FBYS RE3 Hard Drive - 1TB, 32MB, 7200 RPM, SATA-3G at TigerDirect.com

I'm not sure about the cache vs transfer rate difference. which one would be best?

I'm also getting a message at startup where my system is checking the drives and i get:

SATA3 Hard Disk: ST31000528aS CC3E
Ultra DMA Mode-6, S.M.A.R.T. Capable and Status BAD

4th Master Hard Disk: S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD, Backup and Replace.

can anyone give me some clarification on this and a way to maybe get rid of it?

Welcome to PCMech timmy!

I went ahead moved this thread to a more appropriate forum - the Introduce Yourself forum is a venue solely for non-technical purposes.

Run the Seatools on those drives. You get those utilities from the Seagate web site.

Thanks! i got SeaTools for Windows and ran the S.M.A.R.T. test and it said i need to download SeaTools for DOS, so i did. The website said to open it and burn the .iso file to a disk to boot up to so it could check the drive but i couldn't fine a .iso anywhere. all i could find was a .img file which i figured would be it but it's only 2kb and imgburn wont recognize it. i made an iso of the whole folder and of the folder labeled [BOOT], burned them both to cd's (different cd-r's) and changed the boot priority to my cd drive but it didn't work.

the seagate site didn't explain it very well, can anyone help me out?

Neither of those WD drives are really suitable. The Black is SATA 6 and the RE3 is a server drive.

I believe this is the drive you want.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-284-_-Product

Now, you will need a cable with this (if you don't have one) and you would need to download the software if you want it. You might need screws as well. Otherwise, I think this one is it:

EDIT: Since there are variations these days, wait for confirmation from another prior to buying one of these.

booted to the seatools for dos cd and it said SMART has been tripped. i tried to run the long test and the short test. they both pop up and tell me that SMART has been tripped and asks if i want to continue. i click continue and the dialog box malfunctions and the 'continue' and 'don't continue' buttons disappear. i'm able to click where the 'don't continue' button would be and it takes me back to the first screen. i've read that SMART mainly gets tripped due to overheating or dropping/hitting the drive. i've not dropped the drive and my case stays cool.

any ideas?

ALSO: i used a free disk check program from passmark.com that shows me all the values of the drive and all the values of SMART and all were fine except for the Reallocated Sector Count. It read:
'Reallocated Sector Count - Status:Fail - Value:2 -Worst:2 - Threshold:36 - Raw Value:4015
is this fixable?

Not fixable. Contact Seagate for a RMA.

Many here (including myself) recommend Acronis True Image Home. Will allow you to do a complete drive clone using the software on the CD rather than in Windows.

If you buy a WD, you can download Acronis True Image WD Edition from WD.

Will you PLEASE quit flaming Seagate? *ANY* drive manufacturer can send out defective drives! IT HAPPENS. I've RMA'd just as many WD's over the years as Seagates........
