New build not booting

Hi all,

This is my 2nd computer I'm building. I've got everything assembled and when I try booting it the front panel shows it's on, my case fans turn on but no beep and the cpu fan just kind of jiggles. It looks like it tries to start turning and then gives up. Then tries again a couple seconds later. I disconnected everything but what was necessary to boot it and still same response. I bought two ram modules and tried with each same response.

Could it be the mobo? This is what I purchased.

GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

It mostly likely the motherboard. Do you have access to another motherboard with the same socket so you can try it out all the components?
We also need a full list of hardware so we can give you better advice!

Just looking at the least of components my gut says it is that Gigabyte motherboard causing your problems. RMA time!

I may sound like an idiot asking this but what is "RMA"?

Ok so I need to return the motherboard. Everywhere I read about the cpu and the cooler is that separating the two can damage the cpu because of the thermal paste. Am I going to damage it when I take it off the board?

You won't damage it as long as you're careful. The most likely damage you can cause is bending the pins on the CPU. Just reverse the process of attaching the heatsink and be aware of the CPU when you lift it off. If the CPU comes off with it, be sure it doesn't drop after you separate the heatsink from the motherboard.

You should be able to pull or slide the CPU off the heatsink (if they come out together) and then you'll need to clean off all the thermal grease from both. Again, the most difficult part of this is getting the CPU completely clean without bending any pins. You can do it, just be cautious. Get the bulk of the grease off with a lint free rag or shop cloth and then clean off any residue with isopropyl alcohol.

Best bet is to pull the motherboard out of the case prior to any of this work.

Return Merchandise Authorization. It's permission to return a part to the manufacturer usually for something still under warranty. You will get a number from them for their reference.
