New build-any advice?
Hello all,
I am putting together a new system and would like your input as far as components go. I will be mostly surfing the web and word processing. I typically have several windows open at once due to the nature of my job which requires me to jump back and forth between multiple websites. I will be using the system for at least 8 hours a day since I work from home. Here is what I was thinking: ASUS M4A88TD-M AM3 Motherboard AMD PHENOM IIx4 945 3.0 Ghz Processor w/oem fan WESTERN DIGITAL WD1001FALS 1TB Hard Drive G-SKILL 4GB DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Memory LG 22x SATA DVD Burner w/Lightscribe (don't remember the model#) WINDOWS 7 Home Premium 64 ANTEC SONATA II Tower (I already have this case, new never used) CORSAIR 450W Power Supply (I already have this PSU, sitting on a shelf) Will this PSU be big enough? I plan on using the onboard video on the ASUS motherboard since I don't do any gaming. I have an external harddrive but nothing else will be connected externally except when I connect my camera or Ipod. I used the PSU calculators I found on the Forum and they all gave me different wattage #'s, so I am bit confused as to what size PSU to use. Any suggestions on components would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

G-SKILL is to be avoided at this time, their DDR3 memory is facing major production problems.
Go with Crucial, Kingston, Corsair or A-DATA memory. This is a very capable machine you are building and will meet and exceed all your expectations. The only thing I would add is a Low end DX11 video card like the ATI 5450 so you can truly enjoy all that Windows 7 offers.

Thanks Khalil. I am thinking of going with the 4GB A-Data memory model # AX3U1600GB2G9-2G instead of the G-Skill memory. Any suggestions on the PSU? Is the 450W enough? I think I will stick with the onboard video for now and possibly upgrade to a dedicated graphics card later on.
Thanks |

I'd say that PSU is good enough, but you'd need to upgrade it if you ever install a video card.

So if I add the ATI 5450 video card I would need a larger PSU correct? I ran the PSU calculator and most of them state even with a video card I would only need 348Watts max....hmmm.

Nope, that 450W Corsair power supply is sufficient for the 5450 all the way up to a 5770.

Khalil is correct, a quality PSU of 450w will power a single entry level graphics card just fine. (corsair is a good quality brand)

A 450 watt Corsair is even good enough to power a midrange video card.
